Fall 2023 - Professor Westrup is amazing. Gives great feedback and makes you want to become a better writer. She has three mandatory sign-ups for office hours where you talk about the three essays that make up your final. Those meetings are extremely helpful. Her verbal feedback is great too and you can tell she cares deeply for her students. The class is fairly easy too so don’t feel intimidated if you’re not the best writer. This class will only help you. The class could feel a bit long at times, but never too boring. The class assignments were easy and she switches up seating so you get to connect with more people. Throughout the quarter you work on the three essays that will make up your Final Portfolio. Highly suggest you go to her office hours so you can better your writing because her feedback is very helpful.

Fall 2023 - I highly recommend this class for fufilling your writing I and diversity requirement! Although I am not the best in English (ap lang exam score was a 2, poor SAT english/grammar), I still managed to get a A-! There are only 3 essays for the quarter to complete (first-4 page, 2nd-9 page, 3rd- vary (for mine it was 3 pages..op-ed style)) and I love how the professor offers extensions. I had a 1 week extension for the first one and 4 day extension for the last essay! It really helped me spend time studying for midterms & final, you just have to email Laurel for an extension and she will give it to you (u dont need to make an excuse). She really wants to make the students feel comfortable so she reminds everyone every now and then that you can have extensions (for the final draft). Since theres only 3 essays… the process in completing an essay is in order of: “shitty” first draft- where u can just make a outline…write what comes to mind for the prompt..etc, then the first draft which will be peer reviewed by 3-4 classmates (u will do the same), and lastly the “final draft” where u will finalize everything and get a grade for it. Its straightforward! Essays are worth majority of your grade but participation really plays a big role to increase or lower your grade. You need to actively participate with any discussion… sharing your opinion or answer for a question. I got a A for partcipation so it helped my grade. I had a B for first essay, A for second, and a C for the last essay ( I forgot to put a cited page….silly mistakes). The theme for the class was diversity in Los Angeles and I learned a lot about gentrification. There is also a neighborhood project where you make a web page from google app with a group on an assigned neighborhood. ALSO, highly recommend doing at least 1-2 office hours…there is a zoom option! Honestly I am grateful I took this class and professor because my roommate had to complete 3-4 essays by the week for her eng comp 3 class. SHE WAS STRESSED. 10/10 for this class :)
