This guy is a good teacher. I want to give out my scores because I hate how other people don't tell u what you need to get an A. The average on the midterm which is out of 60 points was a 45/60. I personally got a 49. Butcher said between 50-60 was an A. On the quizes which are 50 points they are extremely easy and I got a 49/50. The final has about 10 detailed questions that unless u know the book by heart you will not get. It is out of 90 points, however Butcher gives an extremely generous curve. I got a 74 out of 90 on his final and got a solid A in the class. He even was nice enough to tell me I got the seventh highest grade in the final out of the class of 94 students. Therefore, if u want to do well in Butchers class, you have to do the reading and go to lecture but especially do the reading. He's a easy teacher if you read but don't except him to be the type of person who will change your grade if you don't do well. He's not like that.

I took Dr. Butcher's Psych M119X in the Spring of 2008. He never put up videos throughout the quarter; it was all lecture. ^_^ I was taking this class together with Physics, Honors Physics Seminar, Anthro, and Honors Contracts Anthro, and so I didn't have that much time for it. I attended maybe 6 meetings throughout the quarter and got an A-. So... his class is easy, although the tests can be tricky because of how the questions are worded. They were all multiple choice choice, and we used a scan-tron. Anyway, as a teacher, never mind that he's elderly-- Butcher has a good sense of humor. I actually feel bad (in retrospect), because I enjoyed ALL of the few times I attended class. Now what I really didn't like was the textbook. The writing style is very, very, VERY FLORID, and even Butcher admits it. The key to doing well is NOTES. And even those, I did not take down myself -- I purchased from the class notetaker's in the bookstore. Maybe if I took my own notes I would've gotten an A. Be sure to do well on the exams, because you are not graded on anything else but the 2 midterms and a final. I'm surprised some people thought M119X was hard(??). That's a ridiculous assessment. If you survived LS 1 & 2, Psych M119X should be a breeze.

Just finished Butcher's class, the guy's ability to teach has passed, if it was ever there. His lectures don't coincide well with the exams, if you can even hear a word he's saying. The entire quarter students were complaining that they couldn't make out what Butcher was saying due to his low tone of voice, he responded very early in the quarter (week 2) saying that he put out a request for a microphone, and that was the last anyone has heard regarding it. He pulls most of the exam questions out of the book, which is EXTREMELY florid and difficult to comprehend (Butcher KNOWS this, jokes about it in class, and yet does nothing to change it), and worst of all, Butcher tests on the most trivial information he runs across. If you can get past the fact that he loves formulating very detail-oriented questions (such as exact statistical numbers), you'll soon learn that his exams are packed with trick questions. It's not that he doesn't try, because I've seen him attempt to do so, he just simply fails. If the class has taught me anything regarding senescence and it's effect on people, it's that the ability to teach apparently diminishes with age. Do yourself a favor, avoid this guy.
