This is the worst class I have taken here at UCLA. Unlike other individuals leaving reviews for TA's I took the class with Jansma . She is the worst professor I have ever had during my time at UCLA. She is disorganized, unhelpful, and prejudiced towards the LGBTQ+ community and Black folks. Every single time a student of color mispronounced a word in class she was condescending. However, when white students made mistakes she praised their effort. Strangely she is the chair of the French department. I tried making a report about her behavior, but no one ever reached out. Also, the most difficult aspect of this class is she is extremely disorganized. She hands out a syllabus at the beginning of the quarter and does not go off of it, she was sometimes two weeks behind and expected us to be ready for quizzes. Avoid this class at all costs. If you can, take it at a community college. If anyone else has been discriminated against please report it.

DO NOT take this class if you don't want to ruin your GPA!!

I did not have Jansma, but my TA's name was Manal Skalli-Fettachi. She was from Morocco so her accent was very hard to understand and a lot of the times did not know what the translation of the French word was in English. Seemed like she really didn't want to be there. She was alright, but was always scared to talk French in the class and was not super affirming of our progress. Daily online homework assignments that took 30-45 minutes. Midterms and finals were pretty simple, a little harder than French 1. Our oral exam for the final was talking to a partner on a random subject in front of her for a couple minutes.

The workload was a bit heavy and the class is more grammar intensive.

Jansma didn't teach my class so this is a review for Alexie Rubin and a general review for the class. Alexie was a fun and helpful instructor.

Textbook:
Motifs (5th ed). Yep, it's stupidly expensive. But if you take French 1-3, they all use the same book so it's not quite so bad. You could alternatively purchase the iLrn code only (which includes a digital version of the textbook). Just keep in mind that you'll be using the textbook in class often and it's required to complete the homeworks which account for 10% of your grade. Class covers Module 6-10.

Homework (10%):
Homeworks are almost all handled through a website called iLrn. The code for which is included with the textbook or can be bought separately. The interface kinda sucks, so make sure to go to the calendar to see when assignments are due. Also make sure to write down what she writes on the board since the homework assignments aren't always posted online (except the iLrn ones). Each homework allows for 3 tries.

Class participation (20%):
Try to answer questions every so often in class. Attendance is taken.

Compositions (15%):
Composition 1 - basically a biography of your partner as if they were 50 years old. 3/4 of a page.
Composition 2 - you watch the movie L'Argent de Poche (Small Change/Pocket Money) in class then you've got a choice of two topics to write a 1 page paper.
Composition 3 - powerpoint presentation with group of 3-4 about a French speaking country (your choice though first come, first served).

Midterms (30%):
There are occasionally short pop quizzes.
Each midterm has a several fill in the blank/sentence sections, a couple short answer questions, then a long answer question (10 sentences).
Midterm 1 (Module 6) - May include section asking about French news and your news preference.
Midterm 2 (Module 7-8) - This exam was the most difficult. May include a section about the movie/differences between French and American schools.
Midterm 3 (Module 9) - May include a section about French music.

Oral exam (5%):
You randomly draw a topic (out of ~6) and have a 3 minute conversation with the instructor. You then have a minute to look over a given paragraph and then a minute to read it aloud. In my class, we had a practice session where the instructor asked each student a question that would be similar to one that would appear on the exam. I'd recommend writing those down.

Final (20%):
Module 6-10
Mostly fill in the blank. The writing section was a choice of 3 different topics. I thought the final was easier than the midterms, though it's obviously longer.
