Professor Jansma is great! I have taken several classes with her and I have learned a lot.
However, communication about class assignments could be better.
Nevertheless, I got good practice speaking and my French really improved. She likes it when people speak up.
Will be taking another class with her next quarter!

This class had 2 exams, the midterm and final, and 2 IPA transcription quizzes. There was also a research project that could be completed independently or with a group. Participation wasn't really required, although there were a lot of opportunities to participate and talk in breakout rooms. But I took it online so maybe the participation is required in person. The material was a bit difficult to understand especially if you've never taken a linguistics class before, so doing all of the reading in the books was really essential to actually understanding everything. The content covered is the history of the French language and a linguistic examination of modern French. Overall I found the class really interesting, but sometimes just a bit hard to follow.

I really enjoyed this class. Basically it's a series of in-class discussions about assigned CCLE readings about French society (so we talked about the gilet jaune protests and compared the French educational system to the American one). Powerpoints include verbal tics (Euh; bon, ben; qu'est-ce que je veux dire ...) and slang to help improve your verbal ability.

Not too much work, though there are some dense and long readings that you need to be able to discuss at at least a basic level in French.

Great professor, and I feel like I legitimately improved in French.

Jansma was a great professor. She's super nice and she is ALWAYS willing to sit down and help you will things that you don't understand in office hours.
