This class is more difficult than other elementary language classes. It is harder than the past since the professor changed the format of the midterms in this quarter. DO NOT take this class if you don't want to ruin your GPA!! AND it is really based on which TA you take with. If you really want to learn French, do not take the class with the TA Re***ca!! She's probably good at speaking French but not good at teaching it. She spoke French SUPER fast just like showing off her French, and she was often so confused.
I took the class with Jansma. She is just trying to make money off of students. She wrote the overpriced book she sells. The book is not helpful and you will have realized at the end of the quarter you have a worthless piece of garbage piling dust that cost $150. She will make you feel like you are a worthless human being with her condescending comments about your French pronunciation. I do not recommend this professor to learn French. As someone else mentioned, I have noticed the condescending attitude towards those who have never had any background in French
A lot of homework involved but very manageable.
Selling the latest edition of the Motifs textbook, which is required for the class to do the online homework. Don't worry too much about the price; you get to use the same book through French 3.

This is the worst class I have taken here at UCLA. Unlike other individuals leaving reviews for TA's I took the class with Jansma . She is the worst professor I have ever had during my time at UCLA. She is disorganized, unhelpful, and prejudiced towards the LGBTQ+ and Black folks. Every single time a student of color mispronounced a word in class she was condescending. However, when white students made mistakes she praised their effort. Strangely she is the chair of the French department. I tried making a report about her behavior, but no one ever reached out. Also, the most difficult aspect of this class is she is extremely disorganized. She hands out a syllabus at the beginning of the quarter and does not go off of it, she was sometimes two weeks behind and expected us to be ready for quizzes. Avoid this class at all costs. If you can, take it at a community college. If anyone else has been discriminated against please report it.
DO NOT take this class if you don't want to ruin your GPA!!
I had Sophie Avoine, and she was really nice and helpful! She actually cared about our success and really got to know all of us individually. She was super open whenever anyone was having trouble with the class, and tuned the material to our most important needs. I learned so much more French than I expected and it's really all because of this class!
Jansma was actually quite enjoyable to take a class with. Although she's very bad with technology which can often require patience, you can tell she loves french and teaching it to others so much. Participation is very important in this class and you have to stay on guard because she is always randomly calling on students to answer in her class. We had about 3 compositions, weekly quizzes, biweekly discussion posts, 2 midterms, and a final. In addition to all that, there are modules to be completed before each class since this is a flipped classroom. So lots of work, but the work is fairly easy! If you ever need any help or clarification or you have concern over your grade she is very easy to talk to.
I took this class with Professor Jansma (she only teaches French 1 in the fall) and she was really great. This class is not really difficult as long as you do the homework (due every mon, wed, fri) and participate in class. I don't think I learned the french material as well as I would have hoped this quarter but that may be due to this quarter being over zoom.
I did not have Jansma because so many French classes are taken by TA's but I had Brusher, E.C. She was amazing. From America but lived in France for awhile so she has a more American accent making it super easy to understand her. You have online homework every night, but it is very basic French and won't take more than 30 minutes. Midterms and Finals were basic French. Participation is big and you not only have to show up in class, but you have to participate by speaking french. She made me so so much more confident in speaking French!! Super kind and understanding that we have lives out of school. Super young and hip too!
The class was fairly easy and enjoyable. As long as you do the work and read the textbook you should be fine.
Selling newest edition of Motifs for $100, slightly used but still in good condition
The book is the same for French 1-3 and price is negotiable.

I didn't have the chance to take Jansma, but that's A OK because my TA was AMAZING! My TA was Marie Enterline (but she doesn't go by that and you'll have to take her class to know what she goes by). Enterline has been, by, far, THE BEST instructor I've ever had during my academic pathway at UCLA. She is a bold woman that knows her stuff, always has a smile on her face, and you can tell she organized the lectures beforehand with love. She really engaged with all of us, never hesitant to answer our questions and always was happy to clear any confusion up. I was kind of scared about learning a new language, but Enterline made this experience the best. I feel like I have mastered a lot of the material because of her teaching style and repitition of concepts. She never failed to leave out previous material which caused a lot of us to master every concept learned. I wish I was able to take her class for French 2, but unfortunately can't. Anyone who has Enterline as an instructor is truly lucky because she is someone that really knows her stuff and always offers a helping hand. Elle est très sympathique et intelligente! -AA
