This is a great class. Best I took at UCLA. This class is better than Prof. Von Blum's classes because you are exposed to both sides of a topic, not just the radical left's view.

Intellectually engaging and fun -- perfect for summer. Workload is not too bad, but its definitely the type of course in which you get more out of if you put more into.

If you want a fun and chill summer, take comm 184. This class is a debate class in which your grade depends on a single debate which involves you simply preparing a 4 min speech on your position, then a 4 min question and answer session from the opposing side and your classmates. As long as you do your one debate no matter how bad you think you were, you will get an A (thats assuming you did research on your topic and were able to at least say something of meaning). Participation will further bump your grade up. So once you do your one debate you can sit down and enjoy all the thought provoking debates through out the quarter. I was extremely afraid to take the class since I personally don't believe I am much of a great public speaker, however my friends convinced me into taking this class and I don't regret one bit of it! There was never a dull moment! I have taken comm 167, 172 and 184 with professor Fink and by far this was my favorite class I have taken with him so far!

If you are looking for a summer class that is extremely engaging, thought provoking and mentally stimulating to a degree that your probably have not been mentally stimulated before, all while being guaranteed a good grade, than look no further than this class. If you thought you knew your positions on certain contemporary social issues than think again as this class will challenge them. The class is structured as a debate class where all that is required of you is the preparation of a short 4 minute speech on a side of a topic of your choosing, death penalty, abortion, gun control and so on. If you have fear of public speaking, do not worry, professor Fink creates a welcoming environment for students to express their ideas and points of view. If you are social justice warrior that wants to live in a small box and only hear what makes you feel like you are right than this class is not for you. This class is hands down my favorite class at UCLA and my favorite class of the three courses I have taken with him. Professor Fink is a wonderful professor who seriously cares about his students and is always willing to help and talk. Do yourself a HUGE HUGE favor and take this class. I absolutely promise you, you will not regret it! It has been a little over a week since I have completed the course and I miss his class already!!!!

This is an absolutely amazing class! Professor Fink uses his provocative style to analyze arguments on both sides of many contemporary social issues. He's never afraid to question taboo subjects. For example, pointing out how University administrations trample student free speech rights and calling into question the reasons why universities even have Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion offices. Through in the class debates that students partake in, everyone gains a good understanding of modern issues and is thoroughly entertained the entire time.

Ever thought about sharpening your argument skills, while learning to form your own opinion about today's "HOT Contemporary Social Issues?"

Then Professor Fink's Comm 184 class is a must for YOU! You'll learn to craft sound reasons for and against issues like Prostitution, Sex Trafficking, Abortion, Same Sex Marriage, Death Penalty and Gun Control.

Furthermore, the skills you learn in this class will "play forward in many other classes at UCLA." Taking this class is fun and engaging, and teaches how to argue by supporting your point from sound sources.

Especially interesting are the perspectives that other students choose to argue on HOT Button issues like Sex Trafficking, Prostitution and Gun Control. It was cool to argue from a different perspective than my actual opinion, which taught me to keep an open mind.

Professor Fink is a prominent Los Angeles Attorney and author, and was a National Debate Champion at UCLA. Also, he has loads of knowledge and shares it with the class. You can do well in his class, just do the readings, attend lectures, and engage in the debates - you'll be glad you took this class.!.

Professor Fink's Comm 184 class gets a Five Star Rating from me - so take my advice and Just Do It!

Professor Fink provides a class environment that asks students to think broadly about cases, along with the implications and constitutionality of court decisions.
He unpacks many hot topics in US society, and engages students to consider how to apply concepts to other life situations, citing seminal cases.

Moreover, Professor Fink is a high profile lawyer who has represented many challenging cases, and won – he knows his stuff. He shares his legal knowledge and genuinely cares about the trajectory of student’s future goals. Honestly, I expected his classes to be mind-numbing, but instead, I found them to be thought-provoking and stimulating!

Professor Fink taught me how to think about a case from a position of Constitutionality, not just emotion and cognitive bias. I enjoyed debated on current social and political issues, and arguing my position in class. BTW, debating is something I do with people I know, not strangers, but it was fun! Also, he is extremely fair in his grading policy, as well.

I highly recommend taking Comm 164, 171, 172, and 184 with Professor Fink he’s AWESOME.!.!.!

Being a South Campus student with no background in politics or legal systems, I was a bit hesitant to take this class. However, throughout the six weeks of this class, I was challenged to think about not only social issues, but life in different ways. Professor Fink's passion for teaching and justice is clearly seen through his lectures. Although I do not plan on becoming a lawyer, Professor Fink allowed me to find my voice and think about all issues critically. There are very few professors who truly care about their students, and I am fortunate enough to come across a professor like Mr. Fink; he inspired not only me, but our entire class.

I recently took 184 over the summer, and it was one of the most memorable courses I have taken in my four years at UCLA. Professor Fink keeps the class engaged in an open forum class model, and I felt motivated to participate because the conversation topics were so interesting.

Professor Fink comes to class every day ready to push you outside of your comfort zone based on the difficult social issues of the course. However, he does so in a completely respectful way and makes sure to stay unbiased in all topics of conversation. He's extremely knowledgable and gives off a very positive, helpful demeanor. You can tell that he is teaching these courses because he truly loves the topics and getting his students to feel the same way towards the legal system and politics.

Professor Fink is one of the best professors at UCLA.I took four classes with him (Comm. 164, 184, 167, and 172). All were very engaging and thought provoking. Not only do you learn about important legal principles, but you also get to apply them to different hypotheticals in class and on the tests. He is extremely knowledgeable and you can tell he cares about his students. He may seem intimidating in the beginning, but once you get to know him, he is one of the most helpful and fair professors you'll meet.

He is extremely fair and states right from the start that he does not like to trick students. For 167 and 172, there was a midterm and final. The midterm was optional, but was recommended as it could only help you. If you did better on the midterm than on the final, the midterm would count for 40% of your grade. If you participate, you also get a one grade boost (from an A to an A+, for example). As you can see, it's hard to not do well as there are many opportunities to raise your grade.

I would absolutely recommend taking his classes. If you can take all four classes he usually offers in the year, including summer, do it!
