Take this class. I would stop the review there but professor Fink honestly deserves a good review. Not only was his class super engaging, but also it teaches you a lot about the U.S. legal system. At my four years at this school, this was the only three-hour class that I could tolerate and I wouldn’t miss a class. He gives out a lot of extra credit, and his tests are very fair. Both professor Fink and the TA, Andrew, were very helpful and approachable. I would take this class again in a heartbeat, God bless this man.

This class is guaranteed to change the way you view the world. Professor Fink is one of a kind and the absolute best professor I have ever had. He really does care about his students. If you are even mildly looking into law school I would definitely take his class. The work load isn't too much, but you need to make sure you are paying attention in class to do well on the tests. Fink is hands down the most inspiring and eye-opening professor I've had the honor to take a class from.

This is by far the best class I've taken at UCLA. It's so informative and has really caused me to challenge my current views on many campus issues. Professor Fink is a skilled orator and his lectures are incredibly engaging. To top it off, he lectures on timely issues which makes it even easier to relate to. I've learned much about the law -- but also about the inner workings of the university and my rights as a student.

I highly recommend this course to anyone and will be making his class next quarter my #1 priority to enroll in. This is a "must take" for all students at UCLA!!!

Don't miss out . . . Professor Fink's Free Speech on Campus(Comm 167) will be by far the most informative, thought provoking, and engaging class you will take at UCLA.!. Given that most students are ill-informed about the legal contours of protected and unprotected speech - it's great practical knowledge. After all, colleges are supposed to be "a free marketplace of ideas" and Professor Fink operates his class accordingly.

This is where the thought provoking and engaging part kicks in, Professor Fink prompts students to speak up and share their ideas with classmates. In particular, I appreciated that student's remarks were not scoffed at and that different opinions were given a fair hearing! In a world where ideas are cultivated from the same script, Comm 167 offers a refreshing change!

If you want to be inspired take Professor Fink's Free Speech on Campus course is a MUST before graduating from UCLA.!.

Professor Fink is an absolutely amazing professor who cares genuinely about his class and his students. Class material is very relevant and interesting. It does go over complicated case law, but Fink explains it very well and gives real life application to the cases you read. Exams and grading are very fair. Even more so, Fink has led me in the direction of law school. Definitely recommend to anyone who is interested in their rights in general and the law. Fink offered me a job in his law firm after graduation so that I can gain real experience in the field before starting law school. I am a Poli Sci major and this was definitely one of the best classes I took at UCLA , where I learned the most. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Complete jerk. This class may be easy but it's basically three hours of rude students laughing with the professor about things such as sexual assault (The offenders need to be able to yell at their accusers!!!) why white peopl need to have their own clubs to spread their whiteness and how students are idiots for being offended by events like the Kayne western party.

I'd rather work harder for a grade in another class than to deal with such a rude professor and class.

Professor Fink is a great professor who genuinely cares for the welfare and education of his students. He is approachable, passionate and very knowledgable about the class topic. Professor Fink uses the Socratic method of teaching, which means he doesn't lecture from a textbook or from a Powerpoint - instead, he gives hypotheticals and asks questions to challenge the way students think. There are actually no Powerpoint presentations or class-provided notes, but the TA does offer helpful review sessions a day or two before the exam.

There is an optional midterm and a final for this class (i.e., if you take the optional midterm, the grade you receive can only help you - if you do better in your final, that will be the grade you receive) . The examination questions are very tough but Professor Fink implements a generous curve. The exam is structured so that he will pose a few hypotheticals, and then ask you questions based on them. The hypotheticals are quite funny (as are some answer choices) and truly test your grasp of the material (as opposed to pure memorization). If you listen in class and understand the discussions, you will definitely be able to get a good grade. Professor Fink also offers extra credit for class participation and writing one-page papers.

I took both of Professor Fink's classes (Comm Std 167 and 172) and I would definitely recommend to anyone who is interested in pre-law or the topics themselves. I enjoyed the 167 material more, but 172 ("Workplace and the Law") has greater practical application for real-life.

A quick disclaimer for the sensitive folks: Professor Fink does not believe in safe spaces/trigger warnings. If that is not an dealbreaker for you, then I would still recommend that you take the class. There is a lot of personal insight and intellectual development to be gained from listening to - and participating in - the way Professor Fink challenges typical liberal/"social justice" attitudes (even if you ultimately don't agree with him).

Professor Fink's Comm Studies 167 class is a class any student, no matter what major, should take. He is a very kind and friendly guy once you get to know him. As was mentioned below he teaches using the socratic method, which means lectures are as if the class is having a conversation with him on whatever the topic of the day is. I was hesitant to take this class since it was different from your traditional UCLA classes, however due to his unique method of teaching I still remember all the material he taught since there was never a dull moment. Professor Fink loves to help students in anyway he can. If you are thinking about a future in law, this class is for you! However even if you aren't, the material he teaches you will be of use for anyone for the rest of their lives. As for grading, it consists of one midterm which is optional and a final. He offers a bunch of extra credit which usually requires you to think about the issues he mentions in class and write a one page paper on it. After taking this class I went on to take another two classes with him; thats how good he is!

Do not graduate UCLA without taking professor Fink's comm 167 class. Out of all the professors I have encountered during my undergraduate career professor Fink definitely ranks among the top three. He is a super approachable guy who is always willing to help students out. If you are pre-law or are thinking about entering the field he is the person to talk to.!!! With regards to the actual class it is pretty straightforward. There is one optional midterm that can only help not hurt you, a final and A LOT of extra credit, ESPECIALLY IF YOU PARTICIPATE. He lectures via the Socratic method, meaning no power point slides, trust me this is a good thing. While there is a text for the class make sure to attend lecture as a lot of information you will need for the exam will be presented then. Also, make sure to go to the TA reviews as they are super helpful in concentrating on the information and concepts that will show up on the midterm. If you pay attention in class, take notes, read, attend the TA review and participate a lot in class there is no way you will not do well. On top of the class being straightforward the material is super useful given that it deals with students free speech rights on campus. I defiantly left this class empowered with a lot of useful information that completely eluded me before. The only gripe I have with this class is that it lasted for ten weeks so make sure you guys enjoy it!!!! :)

Don't be left holding the bag and your academic future by missing this class. In this class, you learn the shocking ways that modern-day university administrators trample student free speech rights through the enforcement of vague and unconstitutional policies. The right to party offensive litmus test was a principle drilled home through its application to current events like UCLA's Kayne Western party and others events around the nation. We often assume that University administrators always protect and defend our rights as students - Professor Fink will show you that is not necessarily true. His exciting Socratic method of teaching will make sure that you are never bored, even through 10th week.
