His accent was difficult to understand sometimes but if you just follow his notes on the board, you usually understand what he is trying to convey. Additionally, the material in 33A isn't that hard to understand in the first place. The amount of homework he assigned was reasonable. He also assigned weekly quizzes during discussion sections so you had to go. The first midterm was fair, basically if you review the homework, you're good. The second midterm was harder and more theory based. The final was also pretty hard and it had a 53% average. Overall, he was a fair teacher and it shouldn't be too difficult to pass his class.

He is one of the better math professors that I have had at UCLA. His lectures are clear most of the time. I wouldn't suggest asking questions because half of the time he doesn't understand what you are asking. The other half of the time he gives a good explanation. His homework assignments are a bit tedious and are difficult. There are many resources online to help you gain points on the homework. The exams are much easier than the homework and are on the easier side compared to other math midterms/finals at UCLA.He doesn't ask for anything too complicated on his tests. The lectures are a good supplement to the book. I never went to office hours, so I can't comment on how helpful he was there. He spends 1 lecture before the midterm and 2 lectures before the final reviewing. This is helpful and the example problems he gives are similar to test questions. Not a bad class w/ this prof at all. Grade received: A

I repeated this course with Professor Liu after going through a really bad experience with a new professor last quarter. Professor Liu made the learning environment much more student-friendly compared to my previous professor. He tried not to intimidate his students with overly complex theorems and proof; instead he eased into the material, giving us room to breathe and hopefully understand the material. Regrettably, I didn't work as hard as I should have for this class, which affected my midterm grades badly (Having just one midterm for an upper division math course really sucks). Overall, Professor Liu is a nice guy, who seems to genuinely care for his students. I may be biased by saying this, but I think he is one of the best Math professors in UCLA. I have taken 6 Math classes taught by 6 different professors in UCLA, and I hated most of them. This is the first Math professor I haven't complained about since I entered UCLA.
