This class is FANTASTIC. Such an amazing introduction to Los Angeles and to learn more about the history of the communities surrounding Los Angeles. If you're going to school in LA, you might as well actually get to explore more of LA than Westwood! I was able to secure an off campus internship for over a year from this class! (The service learning component has the Prof/TA match you with a nonprofit in the area and you work with them for about 3 hours a week -- really not that bad! They cover transportation there!) Would so incredibly recommend this class to everyone. Very eye-opening and a decently easy A :) (& a resume builder!)
The class was fairly easy, but it does involve assistance. TA pay attention to who shows up to lecture, and I am pretty sure they based their grades on that.
The class does not require a lot of readings, but it does require to go out to a service site once a week and that is up to 3-5 hours, depending on the traffic.
This class is very easy. As long as you show up to class and do your work, you should be fine. There isn't much reading, and the midterm was pretty easy.
HOWEVER, you need to volunteer five times for three hours each time throughout the class. The service sites are actually fun, but it is time consuming to go to your service site, volunteer, and then come back.
