I took this class spring quarter and I really enjoyed the content of it! Professor Morgan is a good lecturer and provided lecture outlines before class to take notes on. We had weekly reading journals that were roughly 150-350 words each and a weekly quiz in section. The two exams we had were a midterm in week 6 and a final exam during finals week. We also had a 6-8 page final paper. Participation was mandatory in the discussion, but not in lecture. For two weeks in the quarter, we had to complete one discussion post before section. I think this class was very doable but it really depends on how harsh your TA grades. My TA told us that if we completed something to the rubric's outline, we would receive a 90-95. We could only receive a 100 if the assignment had something extra or was super interesting. I found this to be super subjective and it made grading not on a clear scale across TA's. I studied a ton for the midterm and final and still received a high B. I answered the questions in the best way possible, but they didn't really specify what I was missing. Also, it took them a hella long time to grade assignments and our final exams. I think if you find the content of Greek Mythology interesting, you will enjoy this class, but go into it knowing you will have to put a lot of effort into it. Just be prepared to not earn an A in this GE course.

Great professor, lectures are pretty interesting and she usually emphasizes important themes in the course (Classics 30) that you'll be tested on. However, grading makes it really hard for you to maintain an A in the class (if you get a B on a midterm/paper/etc.) It's hard to boost your grade. Your TA does all the grading, so I'm glad I had Chiara. Try to get her for this course! You can tell she's really enthusiastic about classics, and she knows a lot. She really goes out of her way in weekly emails, worksheets, & section to make the material understandable. Quick replies to email during midterms and finals, which was great! Very fair grader. Even if I don't get the A I wanted for this as a GE, I enjoyed this course.

Professor Morgan is absolutely amazing. I had her for a Greek class, and although she is very demanding and thorough, why would you be IN a Greek class if not to be challenged? She is such an energetic person, and if she brings this much enthusiasm to a language class, I can only imagine what she must bring to her lecture courses (unfortunately, I never had the chance to take one [I listed C30 here since you can't leave the field blank])! Morgan is one of the most friendly and approachable professors I have had, and is quite generous with her time as well. My only regret is that I didn't take more classes with her, since her love for Classics is so infectious and her warmth towards her students is largely unparalleled. If you're looking to be pushed and to grow as a student, take a class with Morgan; if you're looking for an easy class that only requires half a brain or a proclivity for regurgitation, you'd best look elsewhere.

I took this class as a ge Spring 09 but also because I was interested in the topic. I thought I was really interested in greek mythology and had thought about being a classics major (I'm an art history major). But the class wasn't waht I expected. You read a lot of plays and hymns, not the type of myths you read in high school. This class is also THE most reading I've ever had to for a class. Even if it was awesome, I would prob not recommend it just because of that. The prof is great though, Morgan has an english accent and is hilarious and super passionate. So anyway, I wouldn't recommend it for a ge, too much reading and not as interesting as it sounds. Omg and I just realized I got a B+! Yeah don't take this class. My ta was also really crappy. Maybe it'd be ok if you got a good ta, since mine was super unorganized and never said anything, section was a COMPLETE waste of time but unfortunetely mandatory. Ruled out a classics major after taking this class.

I kind of enjoyed this class. The material is pretty interesting, but for a GE, the workload is very high, which is why I decided to take this class P/NP. In addition to book readings, Morgan assigns a LOT of reading in pdf form from the class website. The books are expensive already (including a tiny $48 intro to greek mythology book that the ucla store is buying back for $16), and the last thing I wanted to do was print out a bunch of pdfs (I hate reading off of a screen), so I ended up not reading much of the online stuff. Her lectures feel very crammed and systematical, I suppose because she's been teaching this class for a long time. It can get a bit boring. She speaks really loud and can sound abrasive, but it might be because she used a blown out mic for the entire quarter. My main problem with this class is that in "surveying" some of the most important things in Greek mythology, it was still TOO much. Lectures were not always in depth enough but rather tried to cram all facets of one myth. There were too many stories and it was hard to get things straight sometimes. My TA was super friendly and great, though he didn't know much. The TAs do control your grade, however, Morgan CAN step in and have a say. In our case, our grades were "above average" of other sections, so she had the TA lower all of our grades. Overall I don't really recommend this class if you are not already enthusiastic about Greek mythology, or need some background of Greek mythology for your major.

this class wasn't too bad. I wasn't on top of my readings, but she covers them in her lectures. It is true that she has practically no say in your grade-if you happen to get a good TA, then you might get a good grade. But it can also go the other way. The only bad thing about this class is that for a GE, their "average" is a B-. That sucks-a GE with an average that's that high? You got to be kidding me. And if you have a bunch of freshmen in your discussion who work their butts off because that's what most freshmen tend to do, then you may be screwed.

I took this class my first quarter at UCLA after having to change my schedule 2 weeks into the quarter. It was my first GE and afterwards I never wanted to take a GE again (although I haven't had one as bad since.) The professor really isn't bad at all...she's nice and quite informative (although the information comes from the book directly.) The major problem with this course is that the professor has NO CONTROL OVER ANYTHING. The TA gives u 100% of your grade including attendance/participation and midterms and essay grades. Considering the class is highly subjective...if you get a bad TA like I did...tough luck. I have friends who got good TAs and breezed through it and I am pretty certain that of the 12 people i knew who had my TA none received better than a B. So if you wanna gamble and try and get a good TA...take this class. My suggestion is dont gamble with your GPA even if you like mythology. In summary, teacher is good but doesn't control sh**.

Professor Morgan is truly a gifted speaker with a passion for Classical Mythology. Her lectures are impossible to fall asleep in because of the level of energy she gives.

I personally love greek myth, so I'm already biased. But I absolutely loved the class, each lecture was like story time. She's a great lecturer and gets truly excited about the topics we discuss. To be honest, I never read any of the readings ^^, all I did was go to lecture and take notes. She covers EVERYTHING in her lectures. I got a good grade in the class with minimal effort. Be warned this class requires lots of memorization, but she gives you a detailed list of important terms and covers all of them in lecture, so it's all good.

If you are interested in greek mythology at all then definitely take this class. I sincerely enjoyed all of the subject matter and Morgan presents it very well. She's fun and helpful at office hours, she set up a good review session before the final, and she emails you back very promptly. I really learned a lot from this class and ended up going on to Classics 10 afterwards. As far as the grading, it really depends on your TA. I liked my TA but she was a picky grader and I ended up with a B+ in the class although I felt I knew all the material very well. The first midterm is a breeze, the second one is challenging but definitely manageable if you study notes and major concepts and slides that she drills into your head. The final was pretty much the same as midterm 2. You should probably a decent writer who can form a good thesis in order to do well on the essay portions of the exams as well as the essay. I'd recommend Morgan and this class for sure.
