Be wary of this class if you're looking for an easy A GE. You have to work really hard to get an A and there's a lot of memorization. That being said, I found this class really interesting and I enjoyed the content. I grew up on Percy Jackson and read Madeline Miller's books, so I knew going into the class I liked Greek mythology even though it's unrelated to my major. If you're in a similar situation, I would recommend this class, but make sure you'll have enough time during the quarter to study well for exams and write a good final paper.

I really enjoyed professor Morgan´s class. She is a GREAT lecturer, which makes all her classes engaging and interesting to go to. I took this class as a GE, but I ended up enjoying it the most out of all the classes I took in the spring, and that is saying a lot because I am a STEM major. I highly recommend this class, I feel like I learned a lot about not only Greek mythology but also about Ancient Greek culture and philosophy. In lecture we went through the major gods in greek mythology, the most important plays such as the Oresteia, and finally we studied the Illiad and the Trojan war.
Though the content is very interesting this is NOT an easy GE, you have to put in a lot of effort to take a good grade, but it was worth it in my opinion. There are a lot of required readings, which you have to pay attention to, even if you don´t read the whole text you need to be sure to know what happens in the plot and who are the characters, because both in the midterm and final you will be asked to identify passages from the reading and answer questions.
You are graded on discussion participation, on your weekly reading journals, there is a final paper on a topic you can chose from a list (I chose to compare the movie Hercules to the myth of Herakles which was fun), the midterm and the non summative final.
This is a great class, and I recommend you have Mariam Usami as your TA because she is simply amazing!

This is a pretty good course. You go in-depth into Greek mythology and learn a lot about myth in general. Morgan is a knowledgeable professor and has a great presenting voice. For a GE, this is not an easy course. There is a lot of reading, as is usual for classics courses, and you really need to read all of them to get a good grade. Grading is also kind of wack- there is no way to get a 100% on assignments, even if you follow directions and go above and beyond. We had reading journals every week, weekly quizzes (which were easy), a term paper, a midterm, and a final. You NEED to study to do well on the midterm and final. All in all, a good course to learn a lot but be prepared for a challenge.

This a super interesting class. It covers a range of super cool Greek myths. The lectures are very well taught and are very engaging. The professor and TA's are willing to help out as much as they can. I feel like I learned a lot and read some pretty cool texts! That being said, this is a VERY hard class. There is a LOT of readings for each lecture, as well as a reading journal and quiz every single week. Do not take this if you do not want to put in a lot of effort and time. Like a lot. There is a midterm, final, and a paper, all of which are pretty tricky are require a lot of studying. Like I said, you learn a lot but it is very difficult and time consuming.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU DO NOT LIKE GREEK MYTHOLOGY. It doesn't matter if you remember some of the names of Greek gods from the Percy Jackson books you read in middle school - basic knowledge like that will get you nowhere.

Overall, I think it was a decent class but frankly, I would not take it again. I'm a huge Percy Jackson fan so I took this class thinking it would be a fun GE that could fulfill my GE requirements. To be fair, it was a fun class, but the workload was INSANE. So many readings and assignments to keep up with, and the tests were rather hard in my opinion. The only reason I survived is because I read Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods and the Greek Heroes (not part of the regular series). I would HIGHLY recommend reading those books if you do not have a background in greek mythology (even prioritize them before the textbooks lol), and you can definitely succeed in this class. Besides that, I just skimmed the readings this quarter, or read the abbreviated version on sparknotes because the readings are very complex and difficult to understand. Her lectures are very straightforward however, and its easy to pick up on the stories once she covers them.

The first half of the quarter covered some of the general aspects of Greek mythology like the Titans and the Olympian gods. The midterm had passage based questions, short term questions, and an essay. The second quarter covered Greek heroes and some famous Greek plays. Final was similar, but 40% of the grade for it was a take home essay in which you created your own myth.

There are Reading Journals due each week which sounds annoying, but actually is a good way to make sure you are keeping up with the readings and lectures. The grading for it however, was extremely annoying. The highest you can get on it is a 95, which naturally takes your overall grade down and leaves very little room for error on the exams.

Overall, not a bad class, but only go for it if you like Greek mythology and are up for the challenge. Keep in mind that the workload is heavy, and it probably isn't best to pair this class up with intensive classes that are actually for your major.

Man, this class really is just not good. I thought this was gonna be an easy A GE with some funny Greek myth sprinkled in but I ended up spending more time on this than in any of my major classes. Admittedly Prof Morgan is very clear about what she expects in terms of the tests. But, she also has this thing where if you just answer the prompt for a short 150-word (!) weekly reading journal then you can get an 85 max. The TAs do seem to grade more fairly than this though so it's not the absolute worst. If you like Greek myth you might find this class more interesting than I did but just be warned that it is going to be a lot of work.

I was so excited to take this class but it was nothing like how I expected it to be. Don't get me wrong, Professor Morgan is great, but for a lower-division class, the workload was ridiculous. I had more readings in this class than in any other upper-division I've taken. Furthermore, the grading is weird in this class because it's impossible to get over a 95 on anything. The TA's will simply will not give you more. You have AT MINIMUM 5 readings a week and these are not easy reads. They range from 7 to 25 pages and are hard to understand. If you take this class please do not fall behind on readings because you will be lost. There are weekly 3 question quizzes which are easy and a 150-word reading journal due at the end of each week which are pretty easy. Furthermore, my TA for this quarter absolutely sucked and did not clarify anything, and had no sympathy. The TA's in this class make or break your grade so be ready for that. I would not take this class again, but if you're interested in mythology and can handle the reading workload then I would recommend this class. Professor Morgan is hilarious and her lectures were interesting but everything wrong with this class overpowered the things I liked about the class. Lastly, The GroupMe for this class was amazing and so freaking helpful.

Do NOT make the same mistake that I and a lot of my classmates made and take this class for a GE requirement thinking it will be an easy A. This class will take up a LOT of your time, so prepare for that. Additionally, there is a weird grading system in place where it's virtually impossible to get above a 95 on assignments. That being said, the content of the class is incredibly interesting, and Professor Morgan's lectures are very engaging imo. If you attend the lectures, there are opportunities for extra credit through live polls, so that can offset the weird grading. There is a weekly quiz in section (three questions, very easy) and weekly 150 word reading journals (also very easy but grades capped at 95 unless you're Plato himself). Exams consist of a midterm and a final (both require a bluebook), and also a final paper due towards the end of the quarter. And honestly, even with the wacky grading system, I was pleasantly surprised with my grades on the exams and the essay. I walked out of the midterm thinking I totally flunked, and ended up getting an A-! Same with my final essay. My classmates were also surprised with their grades. So as intimidating as all the info and reading was, I think the TAs and the prof graded very fairly. All in all, a very stressful and time-consuming class but the material is very engaging and as long as you actually do the readings, you'll be fine. Also......the groupme for this class was the funniest groupme I've ever been in. Talking trash about all the Greek gods and characters really got me through this class.

I don't normally write reviews but felt like I had to say how trash this class is. If you don't already have an interest in mythology DON'T take this class. Professor teaches what should be interesting material through bullet points and boring slides. There is a LOT of reading for this class and if you don't keep up with them then you will have no idea what is going on. I dreaded waking up going to this class every day, I can't stress enough, if you don't ALREADY like mythology then DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.

Professor Morgan is a great professor! She's very engaging, and even if you have no knowledge on this subject or you have some Percy Jackson knowledge, this class is really interesting. The amount of reading is fair, and we did have reading quizzes during discussions but theyre fairly simple and you can get 100% on them if you paid attention to lecture and skimmed the readings. Honestly, the readings were interesting though so they were enjoyable to read. The midterm and final were fairly graded, and the professor is very helpful and open to hearing feedback. I had Ben as a TA and their discussions were really great too. Overall I would take this class again!
