I really had high hopes for Holczer. He seemed to understand that he was talking to a room full of people who hated physics. His accent was funny, he was enthusiastic, and he cracked jokes about cats in microwaves. However, it soon became apparent that the purpose of his lectures was not to teach us physics, but to make all of us appreciate that we have physics to thank for our iphones, microwaves and refrigerators. That would have been ok if his tests were made up of questions about why physics is awesome, but they weren't. That's not to say that they were terribly difficult. I felt totally unprepared for the first midterm but received over 100% due to extra credit. It's true that if you can read the book and teach yourself the problems, you'll do fine. It's true that he takes problems right out of the book. But I really had hoped that someone would TEACH me physics, preferably the TEACHER. My roommate said, in his defense, "I think he's just not good at explaining things to people who are less knowledgeable than he is on the subject." Well what the hell is teaching, if not explaining things to people who know less than you? Is an A very possible in this class? Yes, and I guess that explains the high overall rating, but I would rate him more around a "3" or "4" than a "7".
After about 4 lectures, only 23 of the 160ish people enrolled showed up the class. This professor would put questions straight out of the homework on the test without even changing the numbers, and would add an extra 50 points worth of extra credit on a 100 point test. You only had to complete 2/3rds of the test to get a perfect score.
His class was pretty easy, but the material is confusing so do all of the homework, including problems he doesn't assign out of the book because he drew on those a couple of times. Lectures aren't all the helpful, and if you're good at reading he book and figuring out what's what on your own you'll probably be fine.
This class was honestly a joke. I didn't learn very much, but I had a 100% average on the midterms, simply because he put a ridiculous amount of extra credit on each test. Also, if you write the correct formula down, you basically get half credit for a question. I stopped going to class after a while, because all I could do was count how many times he would say "Isn't it". If you're looking for an easy class where you don't learn too much, take a class with Holczer. He's a nice dude, just not a very good teacher.
I hope I'm not jinxing myself here though, I took the final last week and haven't gotten grades back yet. Oh well.
