Professor Givvin is what every professor should be like. She’s: easy to understand, compassionate about what she’s teaching, actively engaging with students’ questions and most importantly cares about what her students have to say. There are no tricky questions on her exams. Personally, I found all the articles we talked about very interesting, so I did not have to study much for both the 2 midterms and final. I was always excited for lecture. She has been one of my favorite professors in my three years at UCLA so far. Can’t recommend this class enough, please take it! You’ll learn something useful that you can apply to your life as a college student.
Professor Givvin is super nice! She encouraged class discussion surrounding Wooden (emphasizing that we are not here just to praise, but to evaluate Wooden's practices overall). She gave ample insight surrounding UCLA history, which was interesting to learn. She also actively seeks student feedback on the course structure so she can improve it.
We had several guest speakers who knew Wooden personally, and we even got to tour Pauley! The workload is very manageable as long as you submit it on time. (Be careful about late penalties!) Our class assignments consisted of research article summaries and a final group video project. Overall, I enjoyed this class and am happy that Professor Givvin is teaching it!
This class means so much to me and I encourage everyone to take it! First of all, Dr Givvin was very empathetic, kind, and upbeat during every class. Her passion for educational psychology in sport really comes through and it's a pleasure to talk with her and discuss topics in class. Secondly, the class itself taught me a lot about Wooden's ideologies and how they are simple but effective. His small ideas like being intentional with your actions and working hard really resonated with me.
There were 3 components to the class: discussion posts before each class based on our reactions to a reading, a short research paper, and a group video project. All assignments allowed us to be creative and thoughtful. There were some guidelines, but I felt I took liberties in my assignments and expressed my true opinions. Dr. Givvin expressed from the beginning that if our efforts shone through in our work (regardless of how articulate or insightful something was) that our grade would always reflect that. Also, the group project assignment was very balanced and collaborative (I know group projects can sometimes be annoying).
I also wanted to say that I'm not the type of person to speak up often in class or be very social, but Dr. Givvin and the rest of the class were very welcoming and friendly. I never felt I wasn't a part of the discussion or that my inputs were invalid.
This class was easy but felt pretty mindless in my opinion. There are 2 different grading schemes and Prof Givvin picks the one that gives you a higher grade. Grading scheme 1 is: participation 15%, midterm 1 25%, midterm 2 25%, final 35%. Grading scheme 2 is: midterm 1 30%, midterm 2 30%, final 40%. She uses clicker questions (iClicker) to track attendance, and you have to answer at least 75% of them to get the attendance point. Attendance for each class is 1 point, and you get 2 free skips. She ususally does the clicker questions right at the beginning and very end of class to catch people coming late or leaving early. Basically she just assigns readings (usually studies) and then unpacks/goes over those studies in lecture. I did not read anything, as I found the lecture to be totally sufficient (since she just goes over the assigned readings in class.) Also, I never noticed her test on things she did not explicitly cover in lecture. She also offers 1% extra credit if you complete 2 hours of SONA studies. The exams were very fair and all you have to do is memorize the main points from your lecture notes in order to do well. The final was semi-cumulative but largely focused on info from the last 1/3 of the class. She took her time explaining each slide and does not fly through slides. However, she does not post slides at all. Lectures are recorded on Bruin Cast. I thought this class was just ok, because it got kind of boring to just go over studies for 10 weeks. Every single lecture just went over the methods and results for a couple studies, and it felt extremely tedious to me. I also felt like this class just tested your ability to memorize and regurgitate results of studies, and I don't feel like I learned anything super useful or was challenged to think critically at all. But overall, this class is a pretty easy A and low workload since you technically can get away with not doing the readings and there are no homework assignments or papers.
I loved this class and Prof Givvin. She is so interesting to listen to and I actually looked forward to lectures, which is super rare for me. Her exams were completely straight forward and based completely on her lectures. There is assigned readings, but she goes over all the information you need to know in lecture, so there was no workload in this class. I will be looking out for another class with this professor! Take this class!!
