this class was too perfect--easy GE, little work involved, hot teacher, etc. the labs and material were simple. 7 labs, one midterm, and one final. i got an A+ in this class and had loads of fun! definitely recommend for non-science majors, or for those looking for an easy GE. or just for fun!
I'm surprised no one has said it yet— this professor is cute as hell. His chili pepper on Ratemyprofessor.com is red, so those who consult bruinwalk.com about professors should be informed of his charming good looks as well.
I guess that's a shallow comment considering there's more to him— he's really smart and a great teacher, too— but just had to say it. Geography 2 was extremely interesting, relatively easy if you put in some effort, and a solid GE— the fact that Zackey was nice to look at, too, was just icing on the cake.
Professor Zackey is a cool, down to earth guy. He is the fairest professor you will ever take. My favorite part about the class is that he didn't expect you to know something he didn't do a great job at explaining. Some professors expect you to learn stuff they taugh well but not Zackey. All you have to do is attend lecture (don't miss) and LISTEN. Copy down what's on the slides plus whatever extra info he might give. Very humble guy that doesn't pretend to know it all like most professors. If you try you will get a good grade.
I am a north campus student who hates science. However, realizing that I needed one more science GE before graduation, I chose the class/professor that got the best reviews on this site. I can honestly state that Professor Zackey is one of the best professors I've had here. I had little to no interest in geography/sciences before the class, but after, I am genuinely interested in the subject. His teaching and subject material piqued that interest, and I am definitely glad I took the class. Albeit I do regret not having gone to office hours and such, it was still a very enjoyable class.
As for difficulty, it was actually a challenge--lots and lots of notetaking that didn't merely entail copying down what's on the powerpoint, but making sure you get the concepts that are on the ppts. Studying for the midterm and final took alot of time, but paid off in the end with a very good grade.
Take this class, put the work and time into it, and you'll walk away happy.
Professor Zackey is the man. He is the best professor I've had at UCLA so far. I didn't take geography 2 with him, but I had to put it sinc there was no option for the class I took. I had his GE Seminar for the environment cluster and loved it. He made the material very interesting and was always concerned with student learning. He is very approachable and easy to talk to. I highly recommend taking any of class he teaches!
Justin Zackey takes the time to work with students. He is truly concerned about student learning and is a great professor. It is important to attend lecture all the exams are based on lecture. You also want to take notes because he doesn't put his slides online. He is available to talk to and to go over exams with.
This is a difficult course but challenge yourself to do it with Professor Zackey and your bound to do well!
Great GE. I'm not going to lie, I have virtually no appetite for most science classes, but Professor Zackey is a very engaging instructor and made the class a lot more interesting than I thought it would be.
Grading is pretty simple: weekly labs (20%), a midterm (40%), and a non-cumulative final (40%). The labs are basically free points, if you do the work there is no reason you shouldn't get at least a 9 on every one. Professor Zackey said his tests were going to be hard but was clearly lying; the median score was in the high 80s on both exams.
I got a 90 on the midterm and a 95 on the final with only minimal cramming the day before. You do have to go to lecture since there are no powerpoints posted, but it's definitely worth your while to take this.
Professor Zackey is good. He teaches in a very straight forward manner which is refreshing when you take into consideration the teaching styles of other professors here at UCLA!! However... this is a crucial piece of information..IF YOU GET LILIA ILLES AS A T.A.... it is best to switch to a different lab and if that is not possible just drop the course altogether because this woman is rude, condescending and extremely unhelpful. All she does is complain about Panda bears and how much she hates them and BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! But Geography 2 is easy, take notes, pay attention to the things he emphasizes and study them, he also post a review sheet for the midterm as well.
Professor Zackey is one of the best and easiest professors I've ever had. He's very friendly and down-to-earth. He uses interesting, colorful Power Points for lecture. Geography 2 is a very easy class--the "labs" are very simple and usually ended after an hour, the midterm and final were very straightforward, there's no reading, & the Species Report we had to do at the end of the quarter was very easy to do. I personally found the subject material interesting and even if you aren't into trees & ecosystems, take this class anyway: it's easy!
Geography 2 is an easy science GE. Zachey is a great professor who is passionate about his work. For me, the material was a little dry, but just go to lecture and take good notes (he doesn't post his slides online so students have to go to class) for an easy A. There is a midterm, final, and one project.
