If you want an easy class with an easy workload, this class is not for you.

That being said, if you want an amazing professor who challenges you and takes so much time out of his day to ensure that you are learning and understand the material at a deep level, this is the class for you! (Definitely the type of class that Engineering majors should be taking to prepare for future coursework!)

Though some may argue that Jukka does not "support" his students because of the extensive material and heavier courseload, I would argue that the aspect of "support" comes from the fact that the extensive homework (which is due at the end of each week, making it manageable if you start early) actually allows you to get in lots of practice (so you really understand the subject at a deep level) AND the support also comes from the fact that he will literally take so much time out of his week to not only give extensive office hours to those struggling, but to craft study guides for midterms and finals that really prepare you for the exams if you take the time to do it.

I could get an F or an A in this class, and it would not change the fact that I truly believe that Jukka is one of the few professors that actually care about your learning journey and your future. He reignited my passion for learning.

Highlights of this class:
* Jukka is approachable and he always welcomes you to ask questions in class.
* Jukka is the type of person to check in with you and tell you to not worry when you're stressed. (He actually cares about you as a person!)
* Jukka prepares his students by telling you the type of problems that can come up on the test by listing possibilities on an extensive study guide. (I kid you not: He literally gives you an organized study guide of what can come up on each of the final/midterm questions. He WILL NEVER give you a question that doesn't match the material you learned in class lectures, homework, or the study guides.)
* He gave us an extra credit opportunity to make up our midterm grades.

If you want to get an A then take this class. Jukka is extremely understanding. He has at least 3 office hours sessions weekly, and towards the end of the quarter it is usually around 5. He will often stay longer than planned, sometimes until 9 pm even on the weekends. If you attend these, you will know what will be on the quiz/exams. The class did bad on the 2nd midterm, and he gave an ONLINE makeup exam where you could earn 100% of the points you missed. If you were the only one that failed, (probably because you partied every night), he will have a 1 on 1 meeting on zoom with you. He curved everyone's grade in the end as much as possible without breaking department rules. So there is no excuse to fail, or if you put in effort, no excuse to not get an A.

However, it is not a "free" A. To do well, you need to attend office hours (at least once in a while). Be prepared to do 30-50 hw problems each week. That is pretty much it if you want to do well.

I wanted to respond to the comment made 12/15/23. First of all, yes, professors often give study guides. Does that downplay the amount of effort Jukka puts in? Do you hate the fact that he gave you those study guides? Not to mention the first and final study guides were almost complete replicas of the actual exam.

Second of all, Yes he doesn't check in with you when you are stressed. And yes, he also has 230 other kids in his class. Do your other profs check on you when you feel stressed? What are you trying to say? Also he had the ones who failed to have a 1 on 1 zoom meeting. What more is there to expect in a professor?

Third, yes we retook the 2nd midterm. You could score ALL of the points you missed back, in an online test. Why did everyone swarm him to curve the grade? Personally, I'm not sure. From my perspective, I was pretty prepared for the exam as he went over the difficult problems such as Rolle's Theorem like 5 times during office hours.

Finally, I agree that the lectures were not helpful. Many of the lectures were too confusing. He used many formulas and definitions that did not really help. I was usually on my phone waiting for the iclicker. This led to me relying solely on the office hours and hw solutions. So I see where you are coming from when you say his teaching methods are not it. Again though, you mention "no support existed". What support do you want? You could have talked about literally anything during office hours.

Overall, I agree that there are a good number of hw problems (30-50 per week), and that the lectures were not very helpful. I still think this was a great class though. Jukka is extremely understanding. He wants you to succeed. He prioritizes being fair (and often merciful) when giving quizzes and exams. He canceled 2-3 quizzes and drops the lowest assignment in every weight category. He curved the final grades as much as possible without violating school rules. There is no excuse to fail, and if you just put in some effort, there is no excuse not to get an A. The diction and tone used in the comment before made it seem as if they were salty about the grade they received. Lastly, I would say “good luck” but you don’t need it because you have Jukka.

IF YOU LOVE YOURSELF, RETAKE THE MATH DIAGONISTIC!!! Jukka is a REALLY nice professor, loves Rick and Morty, and is quirky, but do not let that fool you. I scored a 75 on the diagnostic, I didn't want to retake it. Biggest mistake of my life. Jukka assigns SO MANY HW problems! Maybe around 60-80 a week. He reads off a presentation in class, you have to go to office hours if you ever want to see how to actually do the math. He will give 'practice midterms' and claim they are 'harder' than the real deal, ALL LIES!!!! I just came back from taking the final, within the first 30 mins, a girl ran out CRYING. The final had me contemplating running out as well. The whole class's vibe was sad. I would rather take every single AP test in the nation than have to sit through that final again. All my friends in 31A have barely any homework, easy quizzes, and easy midterms. I am doing harder work, taking harder quizzes, and harder midterms, when I am supposed to be in a class that is supposed to support you. RETAKE THE DIAGNOSTIC. Biggest mistake of my academic career, as of right now. However, Jukka said he will curve the grades at the end. That will be the only reason why the whole class does not fail. Also, do not misplace my anger, I love Jukka, he is so fun to talk to, but the class was absolutely way harder than it needed to be. This did not feel like a support class for 31A, this was a much, much harder version. Do Not Take 31AL. Please.

This class is considered the easier alternative to Math 31A but the difference was under Jukka there was a much more significant workload. For example, my roommate who was is Math 31A had a significantly lower amount of homework problems. The extra discussion every week was used to take weekly quizzes that were ok in difficulty. IMPORTANT: uses Iclicker for attendance so could not skip class and just watch the lecture recordings. ALSO IMPORTANT: Jukka overcomplicates EVERYTHING with proofs and the reasoning behind certain rules but never allocated class time for actually helpful examples. This are all my problems but there were good parts, these are warnings.

This class was a rough ride for me. Jukka is an amazing guy, but quite frankly, he is too smart to be teaching this class. He based everything on the theory of the math, and he only used the most formal definitions and whatnot, which made the class very confusing for someone who was new to calc. There is virtually no "heres the formula, heres how you use it, and heres an example problem" within the class, but there is a lot of "heres why this exists, heres the proof of how it exists, and obviously it works but that’s for you do figure out in the homework". If you're into theory it could be interesting, but if you just need to knock out the math class, it was hard.
Next: homework. Homework was HORRENDOUS in this class. He gave one assignment each week, averaging between 40 and 50 questions, which was just wild. And nothing got graded until the very, very, very end of the quarter, so you had no way of knowing what your grade was until it was posted on my.ucla at the end.
I did pass the class, but everything I learned I taught myself. In all honesty I could have made better use of office hours, I heard they were helpful, but if you didn’t understand how to do the math in the first place then going to lecture was practically useless since all it taught you was why the math works.
Jukka was, however, a great guy. He was very forgiving and understanding of different situations, both for myself and for my peers. He made sure partial credit was applied, and he even did half of our quiz for us over zoom when he was out sick with COVID. Take from this review what you will, but if C's get degrees, then someone who is bad at math (me) is able to pass this class (with some difficulty). I do know a few people who did not pass though, so... yeah.

First of all, let's denounce the first comment as I agree with the second comment:
- "I would argue that the aspect of 'support' comes from the fact that the extensive homework (which is due at the end of each week, making it manageable if you start early) actually allows you get in lots of practice."
What are you insinuating? That those who do argue that the homework is extensive are lazy? You do realize that we have other classes to attend, other essays to write, other homework to complete for other classes right? Completing 50 guaranteed to 58 questions per week and studying for the weekly quizzes is too much. Forget about the discussion work, as we only have to do some of it to get complete credit. Fix your diction and tone.
- ". . . he will take so much time out of his week to not only give extensive office hours to those struggling, but to craft study guides for midterms and finals that really prepare you for the exams. . ."
Almost every professor creates study guides. Come on now. Be realistic.
- "Jukka is the type of person to check in with you and tell you to not worry when you're stressed. (He actually cares about you as a person!)."
This person is just boosting at this point. He doesn't check in with you when you're stressed.
- "He gave us an extra credit opportunity to make up our midterm grades."
He basically had to because after the midterm, students swarmed to him asking him to curve it or make a make up one. He also reached a bunch of emails. So "gave" or was "obliged," which is the better choice?
Closing statement, this class will take a whole lot of your time. I have no idea what the first person was on. If you like learning from slides and NEVER seeing a problem being solved by hand in lecture, this is the class for you. If you like to have to go to discussion just to see problems solved by hand, this is the class for you. Essentially, this was a class to support us but no support existed. No hate to the professor, but his teaching methods are not it.
