super chill class. there were around 2-3 readings per week but you don't rly have to do them because he goes through them during lecture. there were some short quizzes (super chill), 2 short papers, one long midterm and one long final paper, and weekly discussion posts. The final was to go to the Hammer Museum and write a reflection about an environmental exhibit!
attendance was not mandatory and he sometimes recorded lectures (although it wasn't a guarantee). There was one TA for the whole class so they split up grading everyone's papers (the prof was def an easier grader than the TA).
The class content is similar to geog 3
Incredibly nice, smart, and funny professor. Took this class as a sociology elective, which I highly encourage you to do if you are also looking for a sociology elective or an elective for another major (if this class applies). The material was interesting and he is very flexible when it comes to deadlines and readings. This is a great class to take if you want something easy, low effort, and interesting. A few papers and quizzes but they are easy and he is a very forgiving grader. Nothing in this class was stressful at all (except maybe the material which is very focused on climate change, capitalism, imperialism, racism, etc). If the class interests you, there is really no reason not to take it. Highly highly recommend!
Taking a class with Prof. Herrera is always fascinating. He is a very chill, approachable, and funny person. I love to drop by during office hours and talk to him. The content in this class is exciting, as it thoroughly examines the environmental injustice in urban spaces. Many people liked the reading "Slow Violence," so it was brought up in many geography classes after everyone took GEOG146, which he offered for the first time in my quarter. The course comprises reading reflections, a final research essay, and multiple-choice quizzes—the workload is manageable. The open-ended research paper allowed me to go deeply into a fascinating topic. This is one of the most enjoyable geography electives; you should take it!
