Herrera is such an amazing professor. I love dropping in his office hours and enjoy going to lectures in the class. This class would be relatively easy if you do all the readings and go to every lecture. There were only reading reflections (bi-weekly), midterm, and final. For midterm and final, he made them be three take-home essays in my quarter, choosing from 5 prompts. The reading reflection was basically just answered the prompt and integrated at least one reading into your two-page essay. For discussion, participation matters, so speak up in the class. The course exposed you to many different lessons that you had never thought of, and you will find everything interconnected which is super cool!!!
Overall, I would recommend this class to anyone, literally anyone. This class would be a perfect GE in social analysis for you. Even though you are not super interested in geography, I still recommend you to try out this class! Geography is more than just maps and you will discover that through this class. It is a fair A class—if you put in work, you will get a fair grade—and not too heavy in workload. I LOVE THIS CLASS and I believe you would love it too :)
I thoroughly enjoyed this class with Professor Herrera. It was his first time teaching at UCLA so he had some things to work out (such as lectures) but he did a wonderful job regardless. I ended up switching my major because of him. The one thing that I wasn't super stoked about was the course reader because it was kind of expensive...I split the cost with a friend in the class. Professor Herrera was super receptive though and since this was his first time teaching he didn't realize that the course reader would be so expensive so I think that he was going to adjust that for his future classes. My TA was great but a bit of a stricter grader than the other TA. You definitely have to do the readings but honestly, the readings are so captivating and relevant that its not really a chore to do the readings. This class opened my eyes (so cliche I know but its true) and Professor Herrera's obvious passion and enthusiasm for the subject inspired me to pursue these kind of studies. Take a class with him if you can.
Incredibly nice, smart, and funny professor. Took this class as a sociology elective, which I highly encourage you to do if you are also looking for a sociology elective or an elective for another major (if this class applies). The material was interesting and he is very flexible when it comes to deadlines and readings. This is a great class to take if you want something easy, low effort, and interesting. A few papers and quizzes but they are easy and he is a very forgiving grader. Nothing in this class was stressful at all (except maybe the material which is very focused on climate change, capitalism, imperialism, racism, etc). If the class interests you, there is really no reason not to take it. Highly highly recommend!
Relatively easy GE. Memorization was more concept rather than fact based. There is a decent amount of weekly reading but Prof Herrera goes over all the important points from each reading during class so you can get away with skimming the readings. You have to type ur notes lecture is too fast paced to hand write. Prof Herrera is a cool guy who seems to actually care about his students
This class was amazing. As an Econ major, I thought I’d take this class for fun and it surely satisfied. Professor Herrera is a great professor, very kind and is always student-first. He is very accommodating and understanding of our mental health while taking his class. His lectures were entertaining and very useful and applicable to the real world. This is one of those classes where the material you learn will stick with you. Weekly discussions and two papers were the only assignments and the grading is very fair.
