Quarter: Fall 2015
Grade: A-
Sept. 13, 2016

This class was a disappointment and a waste of my time, I suggest you don't subject yourself to this like I did. If you want to see what his lectures are like. look up his name and watch his lecture at the "Chicano Youth Leadership Conference" in 2006 on YouTube. His lecture begins at 41:40. He is much more animated in this video and has a microphone, but apart from that, it is a very accurate experience. In class, he mumbles and speaks so softly that, even in the front row, he is next to inaudible since he refuses to use a microphone. If you ask a question, not only does he not answer, he actively tries to make you look like an idiot for not understanding. He slips into speaking spanish while he is lecturing, but when you ask what it means, he will give an arrogant reply of "you should learn spanish." He complains about the disrespect of tardiness, then will show up 10 minutes late and lecture until 15-20 minutes over his allotted class time, so don't schedule anything too closely. His list of "suggested books" are 180 (and most of them are textbooks). The required books are not relevant to either of his 2 tests (where your grade lies). His final was 26 pages on 5 types of research and identification (of terms and people covered in the "optional" books). it was assigned on Thursday and was due at 8:00 am Monday morning of Finals week. In other words, it prevented the class from studying for finals in other classes because of the sheer amount of writing that needed to be accomplished in 4 days. Do not take this professor. Take any other class on our fantastic campus. Do not waste your time with this one.

Let me do you a favor now by saying "DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR!" This professor is seriously the worst professor one can ever encountered at UCLA. His methodology of teaching is not effective whatsoever. His lectures are so unorganized and have no sense of direction in terms of really covering material on the history of the chicano people. Even while using a microphone he does not know how to project his voice while lecturing so it is really difficult to understand what he is saying the majority of the time. He also plays random film clips that are suppose to pertain to material written in the syllabus but are not at all relevant. What is more worse is he commentates while the films are playing, expecting students to hear him but really cannot comprehend a single word he is saying. Lastly, his handwriting is so illegible. He seriously is a disgrace to the Chicano Studies and History Department and an embarrassment to UCLA.

Professor is rude and disorganized. Belittles students in class and gets angry if you ask a question. Good thing that he is retired, but he might be teaching a class or two. It is hard to understand why he was allowed to teach for more than 40 years at UCLA. This man has issues.

I have mixed feelings about this class. Professor Gomez doesn't use slides or power points, and for the first 5 weeks we spent about 75% of class watching videos. Many of these videos were mostly in Spanish, which is understandable given it's a Chicano studies class, but this wasn't addressed in the syllabus and made it kind of difficult to follow along if you didn't understand Spanish.

I don't think I took ANY notes for the entire quarter, aside from the messy notes he gave us regarding the midterm. (But these didn't help much at all honestly) He also assigns a ton of reading, and I really only read the course reader / the minimal amount i needed for the research paper.

Our grade was made up of a quiz (which was take-home), a research paper, and the final. All of which seemed to be graded fairly easy.

My biggest complaint (aside from the final) for the class was that I never feel like I learned anything from lecture, as it was hard to follow along, and hear him. He did bring in some interesting guest speakers that were super engaging.

The FINAL: On the Thursday of 10th week he assigned a take home final made up of 20 Ids, 3 2-page essays analyzing documents, 2 3 page profiles, and then a 7 page essay with a very broad prompt. He gave us FOUR days to do this. Although its do-able, it's an excessive amount of writing on top of all your other finals. BUT, out of all my classes I did the best in his with fairly minimal effort (aside from the final / research paper)

I don't think I'd ever take a class with him again but I don't regret taking this class as I ended up doing pretty well.

El Profe. is a really cool teacher, down and willing to help you. However, he expects you to go out of your way to make sure you do your best in the class. He is a really old school teacher that lectures and plays films related to the discussion topic, and at the end expect from you to do a presentation on any of the following things:an experience that you had that was similar to the study, a film, a book, or your paper.
For M151A&B make sure to read only the books that he mentions, since there is a LONG list of books to buy, the ones that he mentions the most are the ones on midterm and final. Additionally you wont be ale to read his writing, however if you ask he will clarify and guide you through his notes in the board, i recommend that you take all of the notes on the board since he usually hides the midterm and final questions there.
Also if you are a transfer or an AAP student you have the chance to get tutoring from them and believe me IT HELPS!
Additionally el Profe is a really knowledgeable individual, he knows almost anything about the chicano movement, since he lived it and was part of it. Professor Quiñones is a relic that should be respected and not called the worst lecturer. Make sure to take some time to visit him during his office hours, at first he might be fierce, but dont worry that is just a ask of the wonderful individual that he is!
