TA for our fall quarter needs to be trained better. Inconsistent grading all around. Never taking another pol sci class again.
I enjoyed taking PS20 with Mr. Perry! He is very knowledgeable and grades papers very quickly, which is very nice. This class was not really too hard so as long as you do the work, its almost certain that youll get an A.
I took Dr. Perry for PS 137A but there's no option for that so here's my review here!
Dr. Perry is very nice and understanding. Very straightforward class, just 5 2-3 page papers, 1 research precis and one final paper (which can be an extension of the precis!)
Easy A, IR Theory is a weakness of mine and this class was very doable!
Strange class, half this quarter was online and the professor was not happy about that, threw him off his groove. Lots of reading about IR theory but I thought it was interesting, and covers a lot of relevant topics. Then the war in Ukraine broke out and the professor basically gave up on the class curriculum, saying nothing was going as planned.
Final project research precis was tough to write, and I didn't get a lot of feedback. But it still stands as some of my best writing I've put out so far.
Professor had to cancel class a couple of times for personal reasons but was very forgiving and lenient with his grading throughout the quarter in return. Assignments were graded based on pass no pass, as long as you did them you would get a pass on them. Midterm and final were long but take home so you had a good amount of time to do them. As long as you wrote about what he was looking for, you would definitely pass the class easily.
Writing and Reading heavy but very doable. Final was a research essay building off of your midterm, which was a précis. Then the other assignments where 5 short 2-page "Mini Papers" that are graded based on understanding overall points rather than mastery.
I am using this to review Professor Perry's POL SCI 129 class. I will say that although I am fairly uninterested in the material discussed in this class, it is very clear that Professor Perry cares deeply about his students and he is incredibly passionate. He went through various familial and personal emergencies during the quarter, but he still came to class with a smile on his face. I would absolutely take a class with him again. Do not take this class with anybody else!
As for grading: section attendance-15%, section quizzes-10%, research precis-25%, research paper-50%. Section Attendance depends on the TA: my TA never took attendance and gave everyone full points, while the other TA for the course took attendance every section. Next, the Section Quizzes were supposed to be given out every section except for 2, but due to the TA strike and other issues, we were only given two quizzes. Lowest is dropped. They were fairly easy but that was only because my TA, Bruce, was absolutely amazing and would give us a little breakdown of potential questions. The quizzes are based entirely on the readings. The Research Precis is an 8-10 "roadmap" for your final research paper. You are asked to apply one of the theories discussed in class to an international development/event. It seemed difficult at first, but once you settle on a theory that you like, it is pretty much smooth sailing from there since Professor Perry gives you a complete breakdown of how he wants it to be structured and written. As long as you do the readings, you're good. Lastly, the Research Paper. This paper was canceled because of the TA strike, so I cannot discuss grading or anything like that, but I do know the page count is 12-15 pages. You are also allowed to use portions of your Research Precis within the final paper. Overall, the grading for the course was very understandable, but take this review with a grain of salt because the TA strike greatly affected the course and the material.
Highly highly highly recommend taking this class. Great class and professor. Perry cares more about his students learning than if they write the perfect essay. Entire grade was midterm and final papers, but they are graded very fairly and you are given the entire quarter to prepare for them. Highly recommend!!
Beginning of class Perry might be intimidating and state you will read over 100 pages a week for the class. I read only a few of the readings for the entire class and still managed an A+. He records his lectures so the class mostly felt online for me. Your grade is based on five mini papers (pass or no pass and very easy), a midterm research précis, and final. Everything is beyond manageable. People find him to be uncommunicative for their grades. Message him on canvas and he usually responds. If you’re looking for a very easy and manageable class or just want a good POLISCI Professor, Professor Perry is 100% the one.
