Quarter: Fall 2019

PhySci 5 is one of the most interesting courses I have taken at UCLA. Dr. Esdin is a wonderful professor who is respectful and cares about student learning. His lectures were engaging, clear, and very easy to follow. His office hours were extremely helpful as well in preparation for exams. He simplified the material so it's easier to understand and gives plenty of examples. Dr. Esdin is one of the best STEM professors teaching. He knows how to break down complicated physiological topics into small digestible chunks. Some of the topics we covered I still remember years later because of how impactful his teaching methods are.
The content is extremely interesting and relatable as it's about the diet we eat and how food impacts our health. This class covered a lot of useful topics about human physiology and nutrition, which is very useful as a pre-health student. As long as you pay attention during lecture and take good notes and keep up with the assignments, the class is very manageable. There is a final project that is time-consuming, so make sure you start early. This class was fun and I enjoyed studying for it. I definitely recommend you take him!

I recently had the pleasure of taking Dr. Esdin's physiology 5 course on diet and exercise, and I must say that it was one of the most engaging and enjoyable courses I have ever taken. The professor's teaching style was fantastic and made learning about this topic exciting. One of the most impressive things about Dr. Esdin's class was the relevance of the content. It wasn't just a theoretical discussion about diet and exercise, but was applicable to our daily lives. The class provided me with the knowledge I needed to make informed decisions about my diet and exercise routines, and I have made significant lifestyle changes because of it. Dr. Esdin's teaching style was dynamic, and he made sure that everyone in the class was engaged and actively learning. He would often use real-life examples and anecdotes to explain the topics, which made the material easy to understand and remember. Dr. Esdin is exceptionally approachable and always willing to answer questions. His enthusiasm for the subject matter was infectious and made me love learning about diet and exercise. The professor's passion for the topic was evident, and it made the class all the more enjoyable. Whenever I had a question or needed clarification, Dr. Esdin was available to provide insight and guidance. His openness and willingness to help made me feel comfortable asking questions and seeking help, which made the learning experience extremely fulfilling. I can confidently say that Dr. Esdin's class was one of the most rewarding courses I have ever taken. His teaching style, passion for the subject matter, and approachability made the class exciting and inspiring. I am grateful for the knowledge I gained and the impact it has had on my life. I highly recommend this class to anyone interested in improving their overall health and well-being. Thanks to this class, I have learned how to make healthier lifestyle choices and am excited to continue implementing what I learned in my daily life.

I have mixed feelings about Professor Esdin. He is a good lecturer. His lectures are pretty engaging and I was genuinely interested in this subject. However, the course reader is unnecessarily expensive ($100), and you definitely need the course reader to pass this class. All his quizzes and tests were online the quarter I took this class, but some of them were pretty hard. Especially the lecture quizzes and lab quizzes. Lab quizzes cover the material your TA covers in class. But some TAs don't really cover everything. He does give you a lot of other opportunities to get points, though. I'd say if you are really really interested in the material, then take it. But don't just take it to satisfy a GE.

Esdin is a really good teacher. He ties his personal experiences into the course and makes the lectures more engaging. The class content itself is also very applicable to our own lives because it helps us understand how to eat healthily and why it is important in preventing a lot of common chronic diseases (i.e. diabetes and cardiovascular disease). He is very approachable to ask questions and he wants all of his students to succeed. You need to go to office hours to get the answers for the course reader practice quizzes. I highly recommend doing these questions because sometimes these questions come up on the midterm and final exams.

Advice to do well in class:
* Get his course reader and make sure you understand the big ideas. It is very easy to get trapped in the details of this class, but if you understand the big ideas, you will do well. That being said, however, there are still some questions that ask for the details, so it is still important to understand them.
* His course reader has more information than what he covers in the lecture, but his tests sometimes have questions that were not covered in the lecture. That is why reading each chapter in the course reader covered in lecture is a must in order to do well.

Grading:
Exam 1: 100 points
2 Lecture quizzes (20 points each): 40 points
3 Laboratory quizzes (15 points each): 45 points
Attendance and Participation in laboratory: 25 points
Attendance in lecture: 72 points
Lifestyle Assessment Report: 100 points
Final Exam: 100 points
Completing online course evaluation during OID’s evaluation period: 6 points
Total: 489 points

Esdin is a fantastic teacher. He is clear and concise when he teaches, and the coursework follows suit. I don't think this is an "easy A" class, you have to know your content quite well to score highly on the exams. Overall, great course with interesting and intriguing content that taught me quite a bit!

Dr. Esdin was a joy to have as a teacher! His class was both enjoyable and informational! His office ours were very helpful and I recommend going if you have any questions. I highly recommend attending lecture and reading/annotating the coursereader!!! The lectures are very worth-while and I can confidently say that I have learned a lot about the importance of physcial activity and diet through this physcholigcal science lens and apply it to my everyday life. The project is very manageable! I would highly recommend this class and Dr. Esdin and would definitely take another class with him again!!

One of the easier GE's. Engaging and is super insightful regarding the importance of exercise and breaks down the macros: Carbs, Lipids(Fats), and Proteins. Huge tip - STUDY THE COURSE, READER! Most of what will be on your weekly quizzes and especially the final and midterm will come straight from the course reader which many of us did not know at first. Make flashcards for it, highlight, study it, and KNOW IT! The course reader will not be gone over in class but makes a large number of test questions. If you study the course reader, you will be totally fine!
