solid GE! Selling coursereader for $10, will throw in my class notes! Email *************
Not as easy people make it seem to be. It is a very sciency class and as a humanities major, it just did not click for me. Meeting 3 days a week at 9am felt absurd and too much for just a GE. Attendance is mandatory and verified with clicker questions (i most times just clicked a random button from home just to get my points). The quizzes are pretty hard, they're take home but have a very short time limit (1 minute per question ) which forces you to really know the information off the top of your head. Also this class made me feel so self conscious and made me want to develop an ED. Dr Esdin is a cool guy and a great professor but there are easier GE's out there.
Dr. Esdin is a great professor who is very understanding of his students learning. His lectures never felt rushed, and he said if we did not get to a certain topic that everything was going to be okay. His lectures were very engaging and clear. I was very passionate about learning about diet and exercise before entering the class and this class reached my high expectations. He was a great communicator about any changes happening in the class and he would often give reminders about when an assignment, project, or quiz was coming up.
I recommend him as a professor and this class. The only thing that may be stressful is the lifestyle project which is worth 100 points. It is only stressful if you wait until the last minute, but if you dedicate a little time to it each day, you will be good :) The quizzes were all online, except for one of them, and they were not bad, sometimes questions were worded weird but it was fine. This class was actually relatable and useful for everyday life, and I 100% recommend for a life science GE. (Plus it covers the lab requirement so it is a win win).
When I signed up for this class, people who had taken it in previous quarters told me it would be fun, insightful, and a light workload. THAT WAS NOT AT ALL THE CASE. The lectures were okay at best, but the slides lacked adequate text. The professor skimmed the surface about multiple topics at a quick pace, then expected us to learn in-depth on our own time without any guidance. Honestly, the course reader was much more understandable, yet his questions were so out of the blue and unrelated to anything he said, so it didn't matter much. This is such an unnecessarily difficult, boring, and tedious GE that I would NOT recommend it for anyone who wants to keep their GPA up.
Selling my course reader + iProfile! text ********** if interested
You definitely have to work for your grade in this class. The material is easy to digest and constant exposure to it definitely helps you remember the information better. Your grade is made up of midterms, lecture exams, lab quizzes, a final exam, and a final project. The tests are not hard as long as you pay attention during lecture and keep up with the course reader. The project is pretty easy but a bit tedious, so it'd be best to dedicate a week to spread out the work. I'd say it took around 3-4 hours to put together (assuming you have all the information ready). Loved my TA, she definitely helped out a lot regarding any questions with the project.
Professor: Esdin is amazing. He is funny and engaging. Really nice person.
Lecture: Three times a week but they are engaging and only fifty minutes long. You really need to pay attention in lecture because he does not read off of slides, he talks and writes on them. It is recorded in case you miss any of his talking which I often did.
Attendance: You have 6 free days (two whole weeks of class). After that, he does take points off. Attend lecture, its free points. Lab attendance is mandatory and there are no free skips. Again, attending lab gives you free points.
Lab: Once every other week. Lasted around an hour. Kind of boring but it was tolerable.
Workload: There is NO homework, but there is a HUGE project due at the end of the quarter. He gives you 9 weeks to complete it. It is a tedious project but it is very easy. It took most people several hours so I recommend you split it up. It is a diet and exercise analysis.
Class materials: There is a course reader and a software to track your diet and exercise. I think people said it was around $100. Ask around to share/split the software because you can make several accounts on one software. Many did not use or buy the textbook.
Extra Credit: Surveys and rating professor and TA. Takes 10 minutes.
Final Thoughts: Extremely easy A. Very manageable. Great prof. Would take again.
Best class I have ever taken here. The content is really interesting, and it helps create an outlook in life about dieting and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There were no homework assignments besides a project, which I finished in around 12 hours. A 12-hour total workload for the entire quarter? Extra credit was generously given. The exams were all open note. Overall, this was the best GE I have ever taken. The professor genuinely cared about our health, and I would definitely take Esdin again if I ever came across him in the future.
Strengths: communicative to whole class, attentive, giving ample explanation towards understanding course material
Weaknesses: I can't really out anything here bc I am very engaged in class and feel comfortable in his teaching

This class is so easy to follow and overall a good GE to start with. Weekly quizzes are there which are based on relevant course material but I would take this class again since it is fun, engaging and the Professor is super nice!
