This is a review for LS7C since he does not have a page for that on Bruinwalk yet.

Honestly this class is fine. If you are reading this review I am assuming you have already taken LS7A and 7B and know how this whole thing goes. Just as the classes before, you have Launchpad questions, weekly practice exam problems, discussion worksheets, etc.

I definitely wouldn't call this class "easy," there is quite a bit of information to learn, especially if you have little or no background with physiology and all the organ systems. However, I believe if you make sure to do all the assignments, DO ANY EXTRA CREDIT HE OFFERS, and put in a decent amount of studying before the exams, you can get an A.

When studying for the exams, make sure to understand every single clicker question if you can. Make sure to especially review that information and any information he tells you in the review sessions. As with the other 7 series classes, the majority of the midterm will be showing you a diagram, then 5+ questions that are true/false, less/more/no change, etc. So make sure to understand every single diagram shown in the in-class powerpoints.

Do not sweat over memorizing every single piece of information in the Launchpad textbook. There is too much information in there. Just worry about what Esdin wants you to know.

If you put in some work I think you will be successful :)

This is a review for LS 7C, which has the same content as LS 2. Much of what can be said of Dr. Esdin is said in the review posted below. He is a good professor who knows what he is talking about, but his exams are super hard, despite being only T/F or Increase/Decrease/No change sort of questions. You have to understand the material at a conceptual level (if I increase this, how will it affect this mechanism)? Make sure you don't lose points to launchpad activities or clickers, because you want to maximize the amount of points you would lose on exams. Discussion worksheets are also a must for review, because similar questions pop up on the exam.

The second half of this course was taught by Dr. Esdin, and while I thought he was an engaging lecturer, I don't think his lecture style suited my personal learning style. His lectures are mainly verbal - his slides are almost empty and are mostly pictures. As someone who's a slow writer, it was nearly impossible to jot down all of the information he was saying, which is a HUGE problem, because, on his exams, ANYTHING that he's ever said is fair game. This prompted me to begin recording his lectures. He posts his lecture slides and highly recommends that you them out and bring them to lecture, and this would have certainly helped to copy everything down that you need.
I found his tests to be pretty difficult. He asks very specific questions and sometimes the wording is a bit tricky.
Dr. Esdin definitely requires you to memorize a bunch of useless information, like all of the names of all of the hormones we discussed. I personally don't think memorization of this kind is necessary when 1. Google exists and 2. anyone who needs to memorize this information (pre-meds, maybe) will memorize it over time after seeing this information over and over again in their coursework. Either way, be prepared to cram a bunch of information in your head only to probably forget it after the final is over.
This class has almost no homework outside of reading a few Scientific American articles and being quizzed on them in section. Dr. Esdin did not use the book at all and even stated that he doesn't recommend wasting time trying to study from the book (which begs the question - why did we have to buy the book?). All of the information covered on the exams were mentioned (albeit briefly, sometimes) in lecture.
Dr. Esdin did not podcast his lectures, so attendance was necessary. The lecture slides posted on CCLE will not be enough for you to go off of if you miss a lecture, especially because he occasionally omitted information from the slides posted on CCLE. He took attendance during lecture and would give away information about the test (i.e. "the answer to number 24 will be "b").
Overall, I found Dr. Esdin's portion of the class to be fairly difficult due to the high volume of information he requires you to memorize. The 2nd midterm, which covered half of Dr. Esdin's material, had an average around a 70-72. Conversely, the first midterm (with none of Esdin's material) had an average of 83. Dr. Esdin isn't a bad professor, and you will likely be fine if you have him. Just prepare to attend every lecture and begin the studying process way before the exam date.

Dr. Esdin LS 2 class follows a reverse class room, where you watch the lecture videos he posts on CCLE and in lecture he just goes over some important concepts and do some clicker question. I find this method extremely effective as I get to pick the setting of my learning and I can fast forward things I already know or rewind back to things I find confusing. His exams' wordings can be confusing but are very fair. Just go through the lecture slides detailedly and rewatch all his lecture videos you will do well.

Difficult but very entertaining. Make sure you go to all the lectures, get 5/5 on all video quizzes, and go to all of the discussions - You will later regret for not attending to one class(a 3 pointer) you decided to skip. Every point counts. For exams, literally memorize every single thing he said on the video and during the lecture. TAs are helpful too. But to score in the high range, it would be wise to review some MCAT biology questions as he tends to use questions from there.

Honestly, a really tough class and not an easy A.

Esdin is wonderful though. He is very organized. The class is flipped, meaning you will watch online lectures and go to lecture to supplement your knowledge. While this may be more work, I actually found it really helpful to be able to go back to any lecture you want to study/review.
Participation is very important. A good chunk of your grade will be based on attendance in discussion and clicker questions in lecture. The clicker questions are scored based on participation, not accuracy, which is nice because the questions can be challenging. After each chapter of video lectures (about an hour or so), you will take video quizzes, which are 5 points. These should be fairly easy and are meant to help you, not hurt you. Basically, video quizzes, participation, and discussions are easy points to help you.
But oh my god. His exams are not easy. I study very hard just to get the general material down because there is A LOT of memorization in this class. It was hard for me to memorize so much information, hence my invested time in studying. If you're good at memorization, that's better. But, this class is not just memorization. It is VERY application based. While extremely rough, he is preparing you for standard exams like the MCAT.
I did above average on all the exams, not by much but about 5 points or so. The curve and all the easy points are a savior.
Esdin is great. This class challenges you, but he does it to prepare you. My mistake? Probably not attending any OH. He is very willing to help and clarify anything because he is so passionate about biology and teaching, which makes him that great. Honestly, if I got a lower grade, I still wouldn't regret taking the class with him because he is phenomenal. Definitely take it with him if you can!

I absolutely LOVE Dr. Esdin!!! I took this class with Cooper and Fain winter quarter 2017 and got a C- so i re-took it this spring with Dr. Esdin and it was the best decision i've made academically so far. He is hilarious!
He asks a lot of his students participation and homework-wise, but it is for the best because it really makes you master the material.
11/10 recommend. If you need to take a life science course, take it with him.

I took this as a double prof alongside Arnold. The class in itself is not as difficult as Prof. Esdin portrays it to be. Yes, there is a ton of information to memorize, and I seriously mean a ton because LS2's exams are based off lecture/lecture slides and you can tested on literally ANY bullet point no matter how irrelevant it may be. For example, an exam question might ask something general regarding an entire organ system and its function and then the next question will ask you for the name or identity of a specific molecule of a specific reaction of a specific process that takes place in the body. A downside is def. some of the questions are worded poorly and I would have gotten more points if the questions were clearer.
However, as a lecturer Esdin is better by a longshot compared to Arnold. I guess for you lazy students, Arnold is better in that you just need to study his slides and you'll get an A on his exams but for Esdin, you have to pay attention and take notes.
Arnold's exams were easier, Esdin's were def. harder but overall all the exams are very fair. I would highly recommend going to Esdin's office hours even if you don't have questions just to sit and listen because I went once just because and at least 3 of the topics discussed in OH were on the final and I knew them because I went to OH. Overall, this class is a pain b/c of all the things you have to memorize but for all you pre-meds (basically 80% of you guys), we gotta get used to it.
