Despite getting a low grade in this class, I think Madrid is one of the best professors out there simply because of his kindness and accommodating nature. I was extremely ill during this quarter and scored an 18% on the first midterm and 32% on the second one. Statistically, I should have completely failed this class. However, after talking to him, he was completely understanding and notified me that he will not fail any student who communicates with him and shows improvement. I barely passed the final with a 75% and ended the class with a 78% simply because he felt I showed enough improvement to earn a C+. He also let me take the final exam online to ease any added anxiety and was very understanding throughout the whole quarter. He's just a really nice professor overall, even if he can be difficult to follow sometimes. I would definitely take his class again!
Madrid is the best professor I've ever taken, probably my favorite. He is really engaging and funny and occasionally roasts people during class. he is realllllly nice and laidback. You can tell he really cares about his students' learning and is very passionate about teaching. He's also really helpful and patient during office hours and makes sure that students fully understand everything there is to know. His midterms are slightly harder than the homework but I've heard he curves generously. Overall 10/10 I would take him again.
Young and passionate professor, cool accents, often funny. Sometimes disorganised, but everything he explains during his lectures make sense. Also gives some kind of 'extra credit' by making the final out of 115, but the total points you can get from the final is higher so you can theoretically end up with something like 104% (will be treated like 100%). Overall recommend him.
A very fun guy. He's always laughing in class, so lectures aren't boring. His accent and his ability to explain math make the learning part a little bit hard, but it's definitely manageable. The first midterm took me by surprise, but he definitely explained the format of the second midterm and the final well.
Madrid is awesome. The dude is pretty funny. He is like 25 years old and has a sick accent. He really wants to help his students understand the material. His tests are not the easiest but he shoots for about a 65% average and will curve if necessary. He is always available to help, I even scheduled personal office hours multiple times and he immediately got back to me and eventually helped me with my question. His lectures are solid, but make sure to read the theorem proofs from the book too. He gets a ton of his test questions from the book so just be sure to do extra problems from the book. Overall, he made Analysis my favorite class at UCLA. I highly recommend!
Also, he makes it clear that as long as you put in a good amount of effort, he will pass you. He does not want to fail anyone, but just don't take advantage of his niceness. He deserves your best effort.
Professor Padilla is a very nice professor. It is already Spring 2019 now, but I have to write a review for him because he is probably the best professor I have ever seen for my first year in university. His lecture was incredibly clear, moreover, his slides were very organized. His lectures sometimes get really funny, and he could make super complex theorem easy by giving very ingenious intuition. Definitely recommended.
His exams and HWs are not difficult and definitely doable. But his lectures are not helpful. He is new and he focuses a lot on proofs and rarely give examples. He gives sample midterms and finals, they are good reviewing materials but can be very different from the real exams. In one word, his class is not too hard but it's all about self-learning.
The professor goes over the broad/general points while the TA's are the ones who will actually help you understand the details. In that regard, I learned most of the material by constantly going to my TA office hours and SMC. I didn't go to Madrid's hours, so I can't speak to their quality. But from the questions that I did ask in class, he is quite good at explaining concepts. Madrid is a very fast speaker and has a strong Spanish accent, so it can be hard to understand.
In regards to the tests, he always gives out a study guide from previous exams. However, those exams are usually from other professors. His tests are fairly different from study guides that are from other professors so do not go by them; you should practice the homework problems instead. One time, he did give out a study guide that he himself made and the midterm was basically exactly like it. But I'm not sure if that will happen in the future.
Overall, I would say that you get what you put into this class. If you just practice your homework problems one time before the exam and go over the concepts, you'll probably not do well. The curve does help.
Jose is a really nice person but his lectures are far from clear, concise, or understandable. More importantly, his tests are really difficult, and he doesn't allow calculator for midterms and no review sheets for any of his tests. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS if you want to have a tolerable GPA.
