As a senior, I would say this is my favorite GE course at UCLA. Professor Passos is a super nice person, and he is very passionate about teaching. The readings and movies assigned are interesting. My TA, ícaro, is also super helpful and helped me a lot this quarter.
A 10/10 course. Would take it again for sure.
Excellent GE!!! Couldn't recommend more especially with Prof. Passos. Counts for either Literary/Cultural Analysis or Historical Analysis. While attendance is mandatory all you're required to do is listen to the lectures or watch films to review later on.
The grade breakdown is as follows:
20% attendance
20% discussion posts
60% papers (20% for each of the three)
My TA was super helpful with the papers and provided good feedback on how to score well. The material was not something I would have typically explored on my own but it was very interesting to learn about. Take this class!!!
I just took the class for an easy GE and it totally was one! But it wasn't just easy, it was pretty interesting too. There was a lot about Brazilian history and culture that I never really knew about-- and I swear to you it's not boring stuff! The teacher is super nice and even though his lectures seem to go a little long, they really aren't that bad! There is barely any reading for this class (NO TEXTBOOK!!) and the quizzes and the final are soooOOOooo easy. The midterm essay is whatever, but I'm just not super great at writing essays in general. I got an A+ in the class it was so easy. But you have to go to class.
This class was really amazing. You learn so much about the history of Brazil without the boring lectures and readings. The class consists of reading some short stories and watching films in class--they're easy to comprehend and honestly really interesting. There are only a few quizzes and essays throughout but the workload is light and they're super easy to complete. Attendance does matter though, so you have to go to class. I totally recommend this class as an easy GE or just to learn about different parts of the world.
