PA60 with professor loya was awesome!! i was initially really nervous because i heard that a lot of people struggled with the R aspect of the course and i am god awful at coding but it was so easy the TAs practically hand out the code lol, basically changing just the variables but with the same code that they give you. professor loya was a super chill and funny guy, his lectures were pretty engaging and you can tell he really cares student learning. both the midterm and final were open note with a cheat sheet it was practically like having the answer key in my hand LOL. take PA60 with professor loya it'll be a breeze!!!

Super informative and easy fiat lux! We only met 3 times (Weeks 1, 3, and 5) throughout the quarter, hence, each class lasted around 2 hours. The first class just consisted of him introducing the concept of racial stratification to us. The assigned reading was The Color of Law book, which was an amazing read and you can find the PDF for free online. For the last two classes, you could sign yourself up to either present the assigned chapters of that week or form 10-15 discussion questions and lead a discussion segment alongside other classmates. I will note that if you do decide to present, you will also be participating in the discussion section. Lastly, there was one super simple 2-page essay that you wrote in response to one of the reflection questions that the Professor gave (it took me less than an hour to complete). Dr. Loya was a great professor and had very engaging lectures at the beginning of each class. At times, he was quite unclear on deadlines and instructions. He also responds via email and not BruinLearn. Despite this, he was very understanding, approachable, and overall a great Professor. He even brought us so much food in our last class. Would 100% recommend this Fiat Lux!

YOU NEED TO TAKE PA60 WITH PROFESSOR LOYA!!! He is hands-down one of the most caring and dedicated professors I have had at UCLA. He truly cares about his work and takes the time to get to know as many students as possible. While this class was not the easiest, it's definitely tolerable with the help of Professor Loya and the TAs, as well as the forgiving nature of the class.

Both lecture and discussion were mandatory, and he randomly took attendance 3 times throughout the quarter. He also uses lecture slides that correspond with the textbook material. With that said, you do not need to buy the textbook for this class unless you want to use it to supplement your studying. Professor Loya made lecture bearable and was super funny. I took AP Stats, so I knew most of the material, but it's much different since everything you do is done by hand without the help of an advanced calculator (only basic calculators are allowed on tests, not TI-84s).

Learning to code in R definitely has a steep learning curve, but Loya posts tutorials for the first few labs, and the TAs are instrumental in the process. I had Hannah King as my TA, and she was amazing. She was amazing at responding right away to questions and helping with troubleshooting when needed.

The exams are open-cheat sheet (one 8.5x11 sheet of paper, front and back) and he tells you most of the material that's going to be on the exam beforehand. I definitely recommend going over all of the content covered on the slides even if he doesn't mention it - there were a few curveball questions I wouldn't have known on exams if I didn't go over everything. I crammed all of the homework problems and information onto a sheet and was good to go.

This class is not the easiest, but super manageable as long as you use the resources Professor Loya and the TAs give to you! Best of luck!

This class is undeniably intense, offering a challenging yet immensely rewarding experience. Being taught by someone as passionate about the course material as Professor Loya is truly invaluable. The exceptional support he provides to students is commendable and greatly facilitates navigating through the class.

A significant aspect of the course involves coding using R Studio. Additionally, cheat sheets are permitted for the final and midterm exams. However, late submissions for homework assignments and labs are rarely, if ever, accepted. If you try you can get the grade you want in the class, just know an A or A+ will not be handed to you.

I'm so glad Professor Lola taught this course. He keeps lectures interesting, even though this course isn't particularly my area of interest. That was really helpful with this 9:30 math class. Prof Loya is a funny guy as well, and seems to care a lot about his students. I would say that this class is not easy. I ended with an A-, which I am happy with, but man was it a lot of work to get there. R was SO frustrating and difficult for me. Hannah King was my TA and she was the BEST. So helpful and timely answers to emails. I went to office hours every time we had a coding lab, and she always found the issues in my code that I was missing. She is also kind and very encouraging. The tests are fair, but I had to study a lot for them. The final was easier for me than the midterm, as the midterm had questions on things that were mentioned in passing. Everything being said, I can't wait to never use R again.

Professor Loya is the best! He's super engaging and friendly and I feel like I actually learned something. Also, you could tell that he actually cares about the way we learn and if the way he's teaching is okay. The homework assignments and tests were not bad at all, and it made learning how to code in R very manageable. I would 100% recommend taking this class with Professor Loya.

If you are going to take Pub Aff 60, you have to take it with Loya. He is an incredibly engaging lecturer, and is genuinely there to help you and wants to get to know his students! I feel like the class was set up in a very organized way, and teaches you a lot. I took AP stats, which definitely helped, but you go over enough basics to make the learning manageable for sure. The coding may be tricky to figure out at first, but is very manageable once you get over the first few humps - and I definitely recommend working with the TA and PLFs to really understand it. Overall I actually really enjoyed this class and you 100% should take it with Professor Loya!!

I took the Fiat Lux on Racial Discrimination in Housing. The class only met three times and revolved around a single book, "The Color of Law." The professor is super knowledgeable, approachable, and very funny, so the class is entertaining. For grading, I submitted a one-page reflection and presented a short slideshow about the book; the grading was based on completion (it's also mandatory pass/fail). Like most Fiat Lux classes, if you're interested in the topic, the seminar will be amazing.
