I really liked this professor, he gave really entertaining lectures and actually made the material interesting which is impressive considering it's a theory class. The workload is somewhat heavy, but most of it is pretty straightforward so as long as you attend all the lectures and discussions you should be fine on the exams and term paper.
I did not read past week 2 and got an A. The tests are 'tough' but I finished it in half the time allotted so it's doable. The tests were also short answer to a bunch of different prompts. All I did for the midterm and final was look at the slides literally the night before and recall the key points in relation to whoever he put on the study guide. I attended most lectures and discussion sections but found myself so tired--it was something about being in Dodd Hall and his lectures. Sometimes he was funny but you really have to be motivated to take goooood notes. I took notes but never reread them like ever so it might've been easier had I done that. Just focus on his interpretation of the readings and when it comes to the tests just answer it in the way you think he would answer it. My TA was Joseph Murphy and he was helpful too in giving a rundown of what was covered in lecture.
Not sure why there aren't more honest reviews about Sigmon. He's the worst sociology professor here at UCLA. Avoid him at all costs. His lectures add no value because he just reads off his slides in a monotone voice making it very hard to stay engaged. Sigmon doesn’t believe in using technological devices so be prepared to take notes with a pen and paper. Worse of all he is very unaccommodating to students who’ve gotten covid and have shown no empathy.
Professor Sigmon was awesome. He’s super chill and loves engaging with his students. This class was easy, but not free. Exams cover exactly what is on the study guide, and the professor will throw in a couple of things off his slides. I got an 88 on both the midterm and final studying the day before/day of so it’s definitely doable to get an A- or higher in his class. Both exams are worth 70% of your grade, so don’t screw up on them and wait til the last minute to study. Unlike other quarters, his exams were administered online via respondus lock down browser with webcam due to the ongoing protests/TA strike. The midterm was a bit weird because we couldn’t go back and check our answers, as if it were an in-person exam. If I did so, I probably would’ve gotten an A easily. The final was a lot better in terms of the test format, but harder. It was mostly all fill-in-the blanks and multiple choice. No short answer questions like the midterm unfortunately. Discussions were mandatory and weekly response posts were graded on completion. They took a while to type up since it’s one page single-spaced. To do well in his class, I advise you to show up to lecture, read the slides now and then, and fill out the study guides and you should be good.
Overall, I don't think Sigmon is a bad professor, but he's not the best by any means. His lectures in person were definitely more interesting than online, as we had online lectures for the first four weeks of the quarter. He basically just reads the slides and adds a few comments here and there. The midterm consisted of writing five short essays, and for the final, we had to write six. We also had to write a term paper due three days before the final. The TAs made us take difficult quizzes every week before we were lectured on the material which created a very stressful environment. I would spend all my Sundays on these quizzes, and though I did fairly well on them, everyone was extremely stressed, and the average of the quizzes were consistently low. The quizzes were only worth 10% of the final grade, but the TAs expected so much from us. I somehow managed to snag an A, but this was probably the most stressful class I've taken at UCLA so far.
This class was super interesting and very engaging. As a Sociology major, I found this class to be super easy and very applicable to the real world. Every week you have a one-page, double-spaced, summary reading due to your TAs and discussion is mandatory, you have one free miss. There is a midterm and final. There is also a paper on the quality of a job that someone you know has. I would definitely recommend this class!
Awesome class. One assignment a week graded on completion. I just skimmed the readings and found topics I knew I could expand on/ give my thoughts on to write about for the assignments. One discussion a week where you discuss what you wrote for the weekly assignment.
Exams: Soooooooo easy if you just look at the slides. I attended the first 2 classes and after that I stopped going. I didn't study til the day before the exam. I used the study guide and rewrote the slides verbatim. Got 100% on the midterm and 97% on the final.
He's funny too. Made me laugh for those two classes I attended.
HE IS EXTREMELY BORING. he's like a robot and his voice makes me so sleepy. I went to every class before midterm but i didn't think it was useful. after midterm I basically skipped all the classes (Luckily he didn't take attendance LOL). However, his slides are clear and studying his slides on your own after class will get you an A in midterm and final. His discussion grade depends on how the TA evaluates it. The weekly assignment is to read the material and answer questions on canvas. Honestly, I don't think my TA was any help. But I would still take soc102 with him because his SLIDE IS EVERYTHING.
i loveddd taking this class with Professor Sigmon! don't let the grading breakdown on the syllabus scare you (two exams worth 35% of your grade each, section attendance/participation worth 30%, with no extra credit and nothing dropped) - the exams cover exactly what was on the study guide and are designed in a way that isn't meant to trick you or make it overly difficult. the only con is that sometimes the content during lecture felt like common sense and that there was no need to spend 1hr and 15mins lecturing on it, but as the person below me stated - it's really not much of a con / a great con to have lol. definitely take this if you need a GPA boost or an easy elective!
Pros:
-easy content
-reasonable workload (weekly 1 page paper on assigned readings graded on completion)
-gives a study guide for exams
-super nice guy
-chill class environment
-can find free pdfs of the textbook online
Cons:
-boring at times
-content can be pretty common sense/too easy (not really a con though haha)
Professor Sigmon is a super cool guy. He's very chill and will gladly chat with you after class. He's super passionate about the content, and you can tell he loves his job. The exams are extremely fair - he literally posts study guides for them on Bruin Learn, and the study guides give you exactly what you need to know for the exam. I only studied the day of the midterm and the day before the final and I got A's on both. By far my easiest class of the quarter, and it was so refreshing to have such a down to Earth prof
