I too have taken Prof. L several times now, and each time he's been extremely fair. He may have certain leanings (none too far in either direction, either), but the thing is he puts everything on the board in outline form and speaks clearly. He is definitely a fair instructor, although the absolute expectation is that you go to lecture. There is simply too much stuff assigned in the readings to go off that. He's also fairly entertaining in class. Just GO TO LECTURE and take notes exactly as you see things on the board (and write in his words of explanation). As for the take home exams, base everything off your notes. Don't try to get overly creative.
I had to write after I read the other reviews. This is my second class with Professor Liljeblad. His lectures are very straight forward, he writes everything on the board and always welcomes questions. There is no excuse to not do well in his class. If you actually show up to lectures, do the readings and complete all of the assignments, you will do well in the class. I received an A- last quarter and on my midterm I thought I did a little better than my score indicate, so I looked at his grading rubric and realized a couple of key points I had not put down. It was all written out right there for me to see, I knew exactly what he had been looking for in the answer and it was my fault that I missed it.
As far as his personality, yes he is quriky, but very interesting. If you disagree with him speak up, I've heard people in class disagree and I don't think they failed the class for it. Also, grow up! This is a top level university. The professor is not here to hold your hand or be your buddy. Just like in the professional world, you will have bosses you don't like or don't agree with, but you better do your work or you will be fired. I have a feeling most of the negative comments were from students who failed to take responsiblity for their own failings as a student in the class.
On the whole, Professor Liljeblad is a very fair and interesting professor. I enjoy his classes and it seems like most of the students around me also do. Keep up with the readings, show up, and take good notes and you will do well.
