First of all I think if your a psychology major or especially someone preparing to be a clinician, this course should be mandatory so long as Dr. Westman is teaching it. I'm a senior and this is BY FAR the most useful class i'll take in my college career. I'm interning at a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility and I've gone back to look through lecture videos/pdfs of slides from this course SEVERAL times. I haven't done that for a class at UCLA ever. His tests are tough but they're fair and the most useful tests i've ever taken. Every test is information that you should know as a clinician if you're planning to be one and it uses vignettes similar to ones that will be on the MFT clinical exam. If you're a psychology major and/or want to be a clinician and are actually passionate about psychology. Take this professor!
Ok first of all, TAKE. THIS. CLASS. WITH. WESTMAN. I took this on my last quarter before I graduated and I can easily say that this class is one of the fun, lightweight, and engaging ones out of the column A classes. Professor Westman is amazing! He presented his slides in a very engaging way and often times sliped in a joke or two (which helps student stays focused I would say). He also recorded his lectures, which is really helpful too. Discussion sections were mandatory but they are great as they reviewed materials that we studied in class. Professor Westman also assigned us to listen to podcasts that will be covered in discussion sections. Listen to the podcast. He will test them on the exam, but they're pretty self-explanatory if you listen to them and attend the discussion sections.
I am also selling my class notes, discussion notes, and sample exam! Text me at ********** if you're interested :)
Dr. Westman is very knowledgeable and is a guest lecturer (not an tenured prof). His class was super easy and the exams are mc online open note. Everyone should get an A with him.
Dr. Westman is a great professor. He goes out of his way to learn who students are and really cares about the material he teaches. In addition, his lectures are never dull and he is a great person to listen to and learn from. The material is interesting and the tests are extremely fair. By far one of the best professors in the psychology department. Take this class with Dr. Westman.
Great professor! Makes the class really engaging & also takes the time to get to know students.
Class is pretty straightforward. There are 2 midterms & if you perform well on both, the final is optional. Exams are multiple choice & as long as you pay attention & take good notes on the lecture, you’re set!
I simply would never be able to do Doctor Westman justice regardless of how I attempt to describe this course. He is an amazing lecturer, for any student looking to get into clinical psychology, TAKE THIS CLASS WITH HIM. He was patient and understanding throughout the entire quarter regardless of how much we pestered him lol. His approach to the material was super engaging even though the material can be kind of heavy to talk about he conducted the course brilliantly. Although his tests aren't the easiest, they are very fair. Some test questions were directly from things he said in the lecture almost verbatim, review is necessary of course because there is a good amount of overlap amongst the topics and it can get fuzzy sometimes. I would retake this course in a heartbeat!
