I took this course with Professor Bragin Summer of 2012. He is great. Honestly, he's super understanding and is very knowledgeable of what he teaches. His teaching style is very easy to follow and he makes sure you understanding everything even though you aren't a Engineering major. I am a Biology major (pre-med) and Professor Bragin even made time aside form class to help me map out my future. I highly recommend taking a course with him before you graduate. It was definitely a different experience from my other classes where I couldn't get comfortable/close to the teachers.

This was one of the best GE courses I have taken. The study of complex systems is extremely interesting and applicable to nearly every field.

Professor Bragin truly cares about student learning and thoroughly answers your questions. He will take the time to help you understand the material in class and during office hours.

The material itself is manageable as long as you attend lecture and take notes. The topics introduce a new ways of thinking and approaching problems.

I highly recommend this course!

Hard Classes, saying DIRTY WORDS during the classes. Never take him as a GE course

The Urban Dynamics 19 Fiat Lux course was very interesting, and delves into understanding human behavior and how that corresponds to the dynamics of an urban society.

The workload is fairly easy with just a presentation you have to give before the end of the quarter.

Professor Bragin is a cool dude, and he helps to simply very complex systems for students who are unfamiliar with the discipline.

Class wasn't very difficult at all, and was a very nice GE class. With that said, I absolutely found the material interesting and thought provoking. This class really looked to offer an inter-disciplinary approach to math/science/history.

His lecturing was a little tedious at times, but then again—going to his lectures and making sure to pay attention almost guaranteed a good grade. The PowerPoint slides he posted did not provide all of the information, and in a class with no textbook, the slides had to be supplemented with lecture.

I took Engr 10A this summer. Though the quizzes in the course were sort of hard, professor Bragin is a good instructor. He always respond emails quickly and help students solve problems. He has good knowledge of what he teaches, hence student could learn a lot for the complex system.

Although, it's in the Engineering deaprtment, this class is an amazing GE for students from ALL majors! Professor Bragin is funny and intelligent. Although he does go off on tangents occasionally, I thought the lectures were very interesting. This class kind of changed my approach to science and life in general.

The online readings are not too intense and there is no textbook. If you attend class and take notes to supplement the lecture slides, you're bound to get a good grade.

I have never been so misguided by Bruinwalk statistics and reviews before. I took this guy summer of 2013. I'm going to start off by saying that yes, the graphs about the grade distribution in this class is pretty accurate, but that doesn't mean its easy to get an A. Ever since the poor old man's department was torn down, the class became an ENGR subject. And yes, that means you can be assured that 80 percent of the class will almost all be Chinese male engineers. That might not sound like a bad thing, but for Bragin's class it is.

Firstly, the grading is just based off of showing up to class and three online quizzes. This class, like almost all engineering classes, is based on a curve that is determined by average scores of the students. I have gone to every single one of his lectures, which by the way are INCREDIBLY BORING and studied hard for his quizzes only to find out that he puts a number of ridiculous questions along with a handful of ridiculous answers. There are questions with answers that I am certain he has not mentioned the answers to in lecture AT ALL. After each quiz when I see my score and look at the answers I got wrong, I felt like the only answers I got wrong were the ones EVERYONE must have missed and that my score was reasonable. Until... he sends an email with the average. The averages are always ridiculously high with respect to quizzes that were fairly hard.

Trust me, I look around class during lecture, and NO ONE is paying attention. Those Asian kids either 1) have an incredible ability to memorize every detail he mentions while doing their own thing on their computer, 2) study all their life and do nothing else, or 3) cheat on the online quizzes, which is possible. If you are not one who will be willing to either cheat your way to a good grade or study for hours and hours just to have a fighting chance in this class, then take my word and don't take this class.

Bottom line, this class isn't what it used to be when it was under the Human Complex Systems Course. Now its a cutthroat engineering course filled with Chinese engineers.

Very interesting material, but the professor teaches it with the level of rigorousness you would expect from a middle school class.
This is a science class at UCLA, so you would expect at least some math and quantitative analysis of the models involved. However, all we did was look at simulations without much explanation, and the professor seemed really evasive when I asked about technical details.

If you just want an easy time and an easy A, then course 10A is perfect for you. On the other hand, if you actually want to learn stuff that you can't just Google or Wiki, I recommend finding another class. The professor is nice and everything, but I'm pretty sure you didn't pay tuition to come to UCLA just so you could have a nice guy as a teacher.

Taking Professor Bragin's Complex Systems class my first quarter at UCLA was a great decision! Prof Bragin organizes his class to provide a holistic and comprehensive over view of the material. This class is usually taken by CS and Engineering majors, but don't be intimidated. Even though abstract topics like Thermodynamics and Chaos theory are discussed, Bragin does a really good job at explaining the topics and making it applicable to other subject. This was definitely helpful in chemistry and physics courses.

Bragin is very helpful during office hours. He makes sure students understand topics and encourages them to explore further topics and questions.

Complex Systems is a new and upcoming theory and has the potential of revolutionizing the way we study human events.

Definitely recommend the course!
