So I am taking it this quarter, but due to the circumstances, I feel urged to complete this evaluation for you guys way before any grades come out ^^.
For those who are still looking to enroll in this class, the application is available at https://www.lscore.ucla.edu/research/application.html
First of all: ONE OF THE BEST CLASSES I HAVE EVER TAKEN!!!
Dr. John Olson is a really, really cool professor. He asks a lot of hard but really interesting questions: especially when you ask him a question, often he will ask for "what do you think." For example: "why is that trait recessive (?)"
But don't be scared by that. You won't get punished for not answering or answering wrongly. The questions are great and challenging, but that's great fun!
PIECE OF ADVICE: TAKE 3 CLASSES ONLY (INCLUDING THIS CLASS).
The class is a lot of work. You will spend more time researching in this lab then you will think. But they are all fun hours.
TALK IN CLASS. CATCH UP A CONVERSATION WITH SOMEONE.
There is no curve, no competition. This is where I truly feel the idea of collaborating in learning. Everyone in my lab just talks. Oh yes, weird topics do involve (topics do not have to be about Drosophila), but talk. Make the class fun! I bet you will be very sentimental when the class comes to a close end. I will personally dearly, dearly miss the class as the quarter closes by. For my class, we are pretty much a very exciting one (the very special one that comes around the 9th year of the program), when almost everyone talks (when the students in previous years typically don't), and the topics of conversations involve everything from academia such as classes/midterms/finals to dorm life...
And take this with him right away! He will leave UCLA after Spring Quarter, and you will miss out a great instructor and a great class! Let the joy of the scientific research world to embrace you! Smile whenever you walk in! Talk to everyone, and work hard (of course)!
I can promise you that if you do everything I told you so, you will find this class very rewarding and memorable.
Dr. Olson is absolutely helpful in every way possible! Although he pushes you a lot, it's all rewarding.
I must admit that it was TONS! of work, but you really need to go into this class really wanting to learn and really being optimistic of doing w.e. work it is to get some research experience. Overall, great course/research experience! I recommend it!
