Kochian is amazing

The class is really easy. You give three speeches that you have plenty of time to prepare for and can even take up notes. Kochian will give you things to improve on after each speech and make sure you listen to his critiques. The book is really expensive, I bought it at the book store for $100 you need the new edition unfortunately. Kochian is very easy and you should definitely take this class! You have to give 3 speeches and 1 final paper that isn't too hard. He helps you a lot if you need ideas on topics for your speech and really gives you constructive criticism. It's an easy A.

Love love love this professor. Super encouraging and makes what seems like an intimidating class completely stress free. No final, no midterm just a 5-7 page super easy paper comparing 3 speeches. Meant to boost your grade. 3 speeches, but he guides you through them beforehand with a "workshop" day. Cannot recommend him highly enough.

I took Comm 1 as a requirement for the Communication major. He was very friendly and outgoing, and the class itself wasn't too difficult. It made me realize how much work I needed on public speaking! I'm okay at speaking impromptu or giving presentations, but giving a rehearsed speech was something I hadn't done since like middle school and I wasn't used to!
Either way, Professor Kochian was encouraging and unintimidating and tells you what you need to do to improve. Some people said the class is ridiculously easy, and it can be, but if you're not already good at public speaking, getting an A is a little harder. (not to say it's very difficult to get an A if you aren't, but you'll have to put in more effort).

Also, the course reader isn't needed. He tells you what he expects from each speech in class, so as long as you listen and write it down, you don't need the course reader.

Kochian is awesome. he is such an easygoing professor and very approachable, which is super helpful in a class that can be daunting for a lot of people. We had to do 3 speeches throughout the quarter, one of them about 2 minutes long, one of them 6-7 minutes, and the last one 5-6 minutes so they are not too long. He does require a course reader, but you can buy older versions and they still work because all of the content is the same. Kochian likes everyone and pretty much wants to give an A to everyone, you just have to show up to class. Great class and GE if you don't mind public speaking (or just want to get better, or a requirement for you) because almost everyone in the class gets an A. I wouldn't want to take Comm 1 with anyone other than Kochian, because he provides the most relaxed atmosphere.

The professor is really understanding and chill. He emphasizes a lot on eye-contact during speech. I think as long as you don't read much during the speech, you will get a really high score regardless of your content or delivery. Be prepared for the three speeches, and you get an easy A.
