Three speeches (each 30% of your grade) and a 5-6 page paper as the final. I got a B on the first speech and started freaking out because I thought the class was supposed to be an easy A. He says you can bring a manuscript up, but it seemed he was giving much better grades to people who just had brief notes and barely looked at their papers, so for the next two speeches I chose ideas I knew I could talk about without having to reference my notes a lot and got a 98 and 100. The paper is very easy, I wrote it in one day and just read over it once to catch typos and got a 100 on it. This is a really good class to just get practice speaking in front of people and developing speech ideas on your own! Comfortable environment and Professor Kochian is funny, class can feel a little long and he repeats himself a lot, but I would def recommend Comm 1 with him for an easy A and a good time
Professor Kochian really cares about his students. He really wants to see growth and improvement from each one and he is more than happy to help anyone along the way. This class is very simple, 4 speeches and a paper. The first speech is a pass/fail, the rest are graded but very easy if you can talk in front of maybe 30 other students. The paper is easy too and outlined very straight forwardly, it isn't an issue. Take this with Kochian for sure and it will be your favorite course you take that quarter.
Comm 1 is great. It's super easy and you learn good public speaking skills. Kochian sometimes gets off topic but he doesn't assign a final test unlike some other professors (3 speeches and a paper, that's it!) so I don't mind. Great guy
Pretty decently easy comm class. No midterm or final, just three speeches. Kochian really likes unique topics.
Selling my Course Reader (14th edition) + samples of my speeches (got full marks) for $30 OBO!! Perfect condition for physical books. Text me **********
Selling the course reader.
I bought it used from the UCLA store. I only used it whenever we had to do presentations, so it's in very good condition. It's version 12, but Professor Kochian said at the begging of the quarter that you can use either 12 or 14 for his course. I got 12 because it was the same thing and around $30 cheaper.
$20, but price is negotiable.

This class was super easy and Kochian was so helpful and nice. I wasn't a fan of public speaking before this class but he did a good job of creating a positive environment and everyone seemed to feel more comfortable speaking as the quarter went on. If you're ever not ready to give your speech on your assigned day you're allowed to switch with someone from a later day which is cool.
Your grade is 3 speeches (30% each) and a final paper (10%). If you've practiced your speech and feel comfortable you're guaranteed a good grade. The final paper is easy and is just critiquing some speakers of your choice (e.g. Obama) and then doing some self-reflection. Glad I took this course and would recommend it.
Kochian is the best professor ever! This is the most practical class ever.
Selling the course reader for this class for $40. It is good as new. It doesn't have any marks inside.
