Wow, so I enroll in Music 15 to fulfill my Visual and Performing arts requirement and its supposed to be tought by Chapman and be a fairly easy class for all of us with no history in music. NO! All of a sudden Professor Hall is now the professor, the lectures are ok, but the pop quiz is way more in depth than anyone had prepared for, the midterm is so comprehensive its a joke. and by the time the final comes around, after studying and listening to nothing but classical music for hours on end (on top of the weekly studying), I managed a B+. This is NOT AND EASY PROFESSOR! you will learn a lot about classical music, not because he is so wonderful, but because you will have to cram a billion songs and facts into your head to get any kind of decent grade. STAY AWAY!
If you have some type of musical background (know how to play an instrument, for example), then this class should be ok. I agree with people below about the professor...he has such a volatile personality. Take the class, but not with this professor.
Professor Hall is rude, condescending, egomaniacal and loves to throw hissy fits. His exams are definitely more than required for that of an introductory music class. He grades on a straight point scale and lectures without any visual aids. You must know the entire boring text in order to do well in this class. I can't wait till the UC budget crisis cuts his job right out of our otherwise fine instituition. In short, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES BARRING PERMANENT INSANTIY, SHOULD YOU TAKE THIS CLASS WITH THIS PROFESSOR. If you are already enrolled, by all means, find another class. He is a horrible professor.
This professor was terrible. In the beginning of the quarter, he said he understood how many of us were taking his class as a GE. He said that he understood how we had more difficult classes to study for. Basically, he said he was going to make this class to be something we would enjoy and not have to worry over.
John Hall was a horrible lecturer. His lectures were boring, and his writing was hard to decipher. Sometimes he threw temper tantrums like someone I know and yelled at specific individuals in front of the entire class with his microphone turned on. That was comedy. I liked how during one of his lectures about Vivaldi's Spring piece, he acted out an entire picnic scene, complete with him carrying his "little picnic basket" and eating his "pastrami sandwich."
His class was much harder than it should have been. For his pop quiz, midterm, and final, he had questions like match this phrase/musical piece/artist with the correct time period. His final was killer. 200 questions, the biggest test I've ever taken. Some questions on there could not be answered unless someone read every little thing in the book. Do not take this guy. I was warned after I signed up for it, but I had no other class to replace it.
he's really not that bad... many people including me took this class w/ the mindset that it would be an easy A and i was disappointed that it wasn't... identifing the music pieces for the midterm and final was probably the easiest of his tests... lectures were boring.. but when he get into his MSP (mood swing period) mood.. he will be a hella funny class... but yeah don't take this class if you are looking for an easy A... take this if you really want to learn to appreciate music... to know what the hell is really going on when u attend a classical music concert and be able to talk about it after that
Very likely the WORST class EVER!!! John Hall boggles the mind with his horrible horrible teaching style. The class is not just boring, but insanely hard. The class is lower division, Music 15, yet the degree of difficulty is unparalleled. I had an interest in Classical & Romantic music (and other such genres), but after this class I have nothing but disdain for it.
On occasion, John Hall is funny, but this is more of a dark, unintentional humor on his part\363the humor mainly derives from when he is verbally berating fellow class members for talking or eating etc
He grades you on 3 critiques of a live performance, a midterm, a pop quiz, and a final. The tests thus far are a nightmare. Everyone failed the pop quiz, but there was no curve or admission of inadequacy\363just some tough love from John Hall, tough love is something we don\355t need in an introductory course. His title should be John Hall, GPAD (The GPA Destroyer). The amount of knowledge required to pass this class is ridiculous. So, he is boring, a very difficult grader, a bad lecturer, and mean. Prof. Hall runs the full gambit! STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Horrible experience. The class is way too difficult for GE. Lectures are very disorganized and worthless, yet you have to go because of a stupid pop up quiz which he gave during the eigth week. Midterm was difficult also. He moves way too fast, doesn't care about the students, and is very mean. I had to change my grading basis to Pass/No Pass because his tests are just way too hard for GE class. If you want to study on your own, take him. He's very ineffective and there are no discussion sections, thus TAs are basically worthless.
I HATE THIS FREAKIN' CLASS!!! WHERE DID CHAPMAN GO??? THIS JERK TURNED MUSIC 15 HARD!! THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A GPA BOOSTER BUT INSTEAD IT BECAME MY CLASS FROM HELL!!!! I HAD TO TAKE IT PASS/NO PASS B/C OF HIM I COULDN'T LET THIS CLASS BRING DOWN MY GPA!
