The only reason I scraped a B+ in the class was because classes were canceled week 10.
Everything up to and including the first midterm was easy and straightforward, and then you get plunged into some strange dimension where nothing makes sense and math hates you or something. Unfortunately, this class is a pre-major requirement, so you can't not take it, but at the very least don't take this class with this professor, or at least not at 8:00 in the goddamn morning like some idiot (me).
Study as much as you can (the textbook is awful, and the professor lists off a bunch of questions he recommends you don't do and only a couple that you should so that's difficult) and attend TA section every week for some actual learning. Ryan Boone is a legend, take him if possible.
He gives you all the notes at the beginning of the quarter and lectures off of those. All tests are multiple choice but he loves using "none of the above" and not giving you enough time. You have to buy the Econ calculator. I couldn't find a pdf of the textbook online so I had to buy it. Good luck.
Do not ignore the other reviews - Professor Hahn is all bad. His lectures are OK and he obviously knows his stuff, but its almost as if he structures the class hoping you will do poorly. The entire grade is based off your highest midterm and the final, both of which are extremely difficult and far too long for the amount of time you are given. The only materials he provides and recommends are select HW problems from the textbook, yet he literally says in his syllabus that only 30% of the test questions will be based on HW questions - and I would say that is a high estimate. The questions are entirely different from the HW and way, way harder, often taking the material to difficulties far beyond the scope of the class. Furthermore, the class is on a pure curve that ensures that about 20% of the students will receive a "C-" or lower (not good enough for bus econ). On top of all that, he is very dry and not a very nice guy. You are better off waiting a quarter for a different professor.
I think Professor Hahn gets a bad rap and the reviews make the class seem really scary, but I was pleasantly surprised by this class. Although econ 41 is demanding in material, Hahn is an engaging professor, very clear about the material, and easy to understand. He posts the entirety of lecture notes online as a PDF, including homework problem solutions. It is pretty easy to follow along what he is doing in class.
If you want to get a good grade, stay on top of your work. Go to class, pay attention, and do the homework within a couple days of learning it. TA sections are also really helpful for actually applying what you learned. To study for the tests I made flash cards of all of the concepts and then did the homeworks and TA notes a couple times. The tests don't use word problems and are very conceptual, so understanding formulas and being able to manipulate them will get you far.
My year was a bit screwed up because the final was online, but the grades are usually 40% whichever midterm you do better on and 60% the final. Then, he uses a class rank to curve it. Study hard for both midterms, even though the first one is significantly easier. This will better prepare you for the final, which was pretty difficult even online.
Despite the material being hard and the tests also being hard, Hahn was a good professor and I don't think he deserves bad reviews. Initially I wanted Rojas, but I think the classes are probably equally as hard. Overall, if you're taking Econ 41 with Hahn, don't expect it to be easy. But if you give it attention and practice, it's not that hard to do fine!
Usually, your grade for his class wholly depends on how you compare with other students. Because of COVID, he was more lenient and decided to base it off the average of the 2 midterms we already took OR the (optional) final and the highest midterm. He’s a bad teacher and my TA wasn’t very helpful, so I didn’t have much hope for my grade. Thanks to COVID, I got a higher grade than I should’ve earned. If you’re going to take him, Godspeed and I hope a pandemic will help you out with this class.
Grades are made up of:
40% best midterm
60% final
Professor Hahn is actually quite a clear lecturer - yes, they are dry, but he gets the main ideas across. He also provides class notes online, which is pretty helpful if you skipped a class or two. His class is also very straightforward, his tests are purely math problems without any kind of tricky wording or long intro. However, he does not provide any type of practice problems for the tests, and his homework problems are not really similar to the test questions. This has definitely made it very hard to study for his tests.
Although Econ41 could be some what challenging for some students, and I was also anxious about the class at the beginning of the quarter, it turned out to be a very productive course for me. Prof. Hahn's lecture is very informative and comprehensible that he aims to everyone in the class understand the concept. Most of problems on the exams were very similar to the homework problems, and you can expect a decent grade if you have worked on homework and reviewed the lecture notes thoroughly. I would say about 70% of exam questions were very similar to the homework/lecture problems, and 30% upshoots. Since every problems on the exam weighted equally, Just work on those easy problems first and then move on to those harder problems while taking the exam. You should be able to finish the exam on time.
One of my best prof that I've take.....
He is very clear for me and My TA is also fantastic...
Not enough time to solve all questions during the mid term and final and quite hard
but!! if u feel that feeling, everybody did the same feeling...so plz dont worry just keep studying hard!
Sigh, this class. I actually think Professor Hahn is a very good professor and his online lecture notes have everything in them you need to know to succeed but his testing style is a nightmare. We had to complete 33 questions in an hour for the midterm and around 62 questions in 2 hours for the final. I just found the time constraint to be a bit ridiculous because you have to work through the problems so incredibly fast and a decent portion of your grade is based off of pure chance because you end up having to make a lot of guesses.
The test questions aren't necessarily difficult because there's many that are similar to the homework problems but he does include a handful of "hard" questions that definitely separate out the As from the rest of the class. It's by far the hardest B I have ever earned and I'm glad it's over.
Iris is a wonderful TA but I know she doesn't like TAing for this class so she probably won't be a TA for it again.
