Soc 1 was the easiest class I have ever taken in my life. Professor Stein's lectures are engaging, and the readings are light and interesting. Plus you can totally BS your way through the writing assignments, very very easily. So this is a great class to take if you've got a heavy load, and just want to fulfill a requirement without too much effort. But it definitely turned me off from sociology. It just seemed like a load of nonsense to me.
Stein shows several videos that were life changing. The course material is extremely interesting and valuable, however her two hour lectures can be a little tedious. The only thing I disliked about Professor Stein, was that she annoyed very easily. Two of her pet peeves are sleeping in class and talking, and she would actually interrupt herself to give us a lecture. I think it took away from her lectures and made people feel uncomfortable. The class is well worth it though, it made me want to become a sociology major.
i really enjoyed this class... i'm actually doubling in soc because of her class. the subject is totally interesting because its all about the world and your surroundings... its totally applicable to real life... you start analyzing things around you, but in a good way though... not like "oh my gosh, what did he mean when he said 'i'll catch you later'?" its just looking at your life in a different way. i recommend her if you need a social science ge to fulfill or if you're the type of person who likes to learn about the society around you! she's really hip and to wake her students up before lecture, she plays modern songs that relates to the topic of discussion during lecture! exams are extremely straight forward. jsut read the reader and text book and youll do fine. there are 2 paper assignments.
The class is very interesting and useful. The difficulty of the class depends on the grading of the specific ta because the ta is responsible for grading both the papers and the essays on the exams. Since the lecture notes are not available for the class it is beneficial to go to all of the lectures. As long as you read the textbook, go to class, and spend time writing your papers an A is very possible.
