Prof. Collett is a great professor and she really cares about her students. Her lectures are organized and she uploads all materials on CCLE, which is great and helpful for review. She uploads slides before lectures and gives out outlines at the beginning of slides, which can help you have an idea about what will be discussed in lectures. In lectures, she take everyday examples and examples from readings to illustrate abstract concepts, and those examples are usually vivid and interesting. Also, you need to take iClicker quizzes for readings in almost every lecture. Sometimes, those quizzes are tricky, but to be honest, they are really helpful to your further understanding of readings and their connections to lectures, and they are also helpful to having a sense of what multiple questions will be like in exams. Homework is almost all about reading. Sometimes, there is a sort of heavy workload for reading but they are quite interesting and I really enjoy doing those readings. Tests are not so hard as long as you engage in lectures and do those readings (which are really important!). Generally speaking, Prof. Collett is the kind of professor that I am willing to take further courses with.
I loved this class! Prof. Collett is one of the best professors I have had at my time at UCLA. Her lectures are engaging, relatable, and interesting. She has a way of speaking that keeps you paying attention and she uses great examples to support her speaking points. She is a really kind person and I would recommend visiting her at office hours if there is any confusion. I had trouble coming off the waitlist initially, but she was very helpful and got me into the class. She seems like she really cares about her students.
Yes, there are graded iClicker questions every lecture, though honestly they boosted my grade in the end. At first I didn't like them, but eventually you get used to them and do better. They also made it so the information is fresh in your head so you don't have to study as hard for the exams (which are 18% of your grade each and there are three).
I would highly recommend this professor.
Definitely an easy GE. Tests are 20 multiple choice questions, 6 short answer questions (but you only have to do four of them so you can attempt all 6 and get credit for your highest scores) and one essay (you can pick out of two prompts). If you do the readings (which are pretty interesting), the tests are super easy. Finals aren't cumulative. There are iclicker questions on the reading every day in lecture, so you have to stay on top of it. However, Professor Collett drops a ton of quizzes at the end, so don't stress about it early on- I ended up with only 1 point off in that category even though I got a ton of 4s out of 5. Professor Collett is a good professor because she gives us a lot of relatable examples during lecture that we can use on the exams. There were also some really fun lectures that made me think about things in a new way, so I felt like I gained something from this class.
Hands down my favorite class of the quarter, I learned so much from this class and Professor Collett was an amazing teacher. I took this class as a GE and I am so glad I did. Her lectures were really engaging and the videos we watched in class were really fascinating too. The class material is so interesting and the textbook readings are genuinely not bad at all. The readings were not super long and they were all really interesting and you can understand why they were assigned when you go to lecture. I would normally wake up early on the days I had lecture and did the readings. I spent about an hour and a half reading all of them each time. I stopped taking notes on the readings after the first midterm, as it was a little unnecessary for me (this is because I have a good memory and read actively, do what works best for you). Please show up to lecture on time and with the readings read. Yes, there are clicker quizzes every class but they do not hurt your grade. If you actively read the readings assigned for that lecture, you will be just fine. She also drops a question when over half the class misses it and drops a lot of your worst clicker quizzes. Discussion was also fine. We had small assignments but mainly went over the concepts discussed in class. Absolutely loved my TA Holly, shout out to her. Participation in discussion matters but don't really worry about that. The exams were not hard. If you read the assigned readings and understood the concepts we went over in class, you'll be fine. I got an A on both midterms and the final by just looking over the study guides we made in discussion and making sure I remembered what each reading talked about and how the readings related to each other. The review sessions were kinda useless though. I didn't go to office hours because I never felt the need to since the class was pretty easy to me so I don't really know what those were like BUT she answered a lot of questions in class, which really helped. There were LOTS of opportunities for extra credit so I can understand why an A+ is >100% in the course.
tl;dr If you go to lecture having actively done the readings and pay attention, you will succeed in the class. I highly recommend this class and professor.
Prof Collett is amazing, and I would highly recommend this class! She is helpful, passionate, and engaged, and she made this class easy to understand and enjoy. Her lectures are well organized and clear and she does more teaching than just reading off the powerpoint slides. She provides an abundance of resources and truly seems interested in her students' learning. The weekly readings and daily clicker quizzes contribute the most to the workload, but they were fair and easy to adjust to in my opinion. Her tests were also fair and straightforward as long as you attended lecture, did the readings, and studied.
this class was super difficult. not worth the stress of a GE. have hella readings each week, was the most workload wise of my quarter. the tests were super in depth about the readings, but the thing is that she doesn't go over the readings in lecture, only in discussion. The lectures themselves are interesting and I would totally listen to them in a podcast or something, but NOT when your GPA depends on it. Would not recommend, at least during COVID.
I honestly liked this class and Collett is pretty fair. There is a lot of cushion to your grade like she drops some of your lowest quizzes and stuff. I took this class asynchronous online. I thought that she was pretty nice and she tried to make the class engaging by posting weekly recap videos and having a slack channel open for us. If you have questions, you could ask in the slack and she was pretty active on it and didn't take too long to respond, but you or other students can respond to each other as well.
The exams in my opinion were kinda hard, especially the midterm but I feel like the final was better. I got a D+ on the midterm and a B on the final and still ended with an A- since I did all the other work. The readings ARE NECESSARY to do well in the class since you have to pull examples and relate concepts to the readings in the exams. However, you can check it out for free at the powell library reserve but there's no free online version. There are multiple deadlines throughout the week so stay on track because there is a good amount of work you have to do.
This class has a fair amount of work to do, but it's very doable as long as you stay on top of things and don't fall behind. For summer session there was about an hour of lecture and 2 readings three times a week, and there are short engagement checks for each lecture/reading. The readings in this class are pretty long (about 4-10 pages each) and they come from the textbook which is mandatory. I would definitely recommend taking notes for each reading and lecture so you have an idea of what each was about and you can refer back to them if necessary, especially since the tests include an essay portion.
I'm selling a copy of the textbook at **********.
I took this class online asynchronously so that may skew my experiences with the class, but nonetheless, I only have good things to say about Professor Collett and the course. Lectures and readings, while abundant, were clearly organized and easy to follow- I dedicated friday evenings to getting the whole subsequents week’s worth of notes, readings, engagement checks, and hw done with no issues. The midterm and final were open all day but were timed once begun. The midterm was a little tricky but the final was a piece of cake. Didn’t study for either and my average exam grade was a 95. Again, being able to have my lecture and reading notes available obviously allowed me to not have to extensively prepare. My biggest advice is take notes on the readings as you go, don’t be like me and take notes for 20+ readings each right before the exam(s). The reviews of this class seem to be predominantly from STEM majors calling this class a difficult GE, if nog the most difficult. As a newly switched sociology major, this class was my highest grade to date and was enjoyable beginning to end… I actually feel like I’ve learned and retained some valuable information (contrary to what some may say). Definitely recommend taking this class with Professor Collett!!
This class is amazing! Whether you're looking for a Social Analysis GE, interested in Sociology, or taking this for a Comm lower-division class, I highly recommend. The lectures are extremely well thought-out, interesting, and perfectly paced. The professor is amazing, and she is the chair of the Sociology department so she is a great person to know if you are considering studying Sociology. There were weekly challenges that were fairly easy if you engaged with the materials, easy weekly discussion boards that only took a few minutes, and (long but not hard) midterm and final. The only drawback to this class is the length of the readings, but they are interesting and easy nonetheless!
