Hands down my favorite class of the quarter, I learned so much from this class and Professor Collett was an amazing teacher. I took this class as a GE and I am so glad I did. Her lectures were really engaging and the videos we watched in class were really fascinating too. The class material is so interesting and the textbook readings are genuinely not bad at all. The readings were not super long and they were all really interesting and you can understand why they were assigned when you go to lecture. I would normally wake up early on the days I had lecture and did the readings. I spent about an hour and a half reading all of them each time. I stopped taking notes on the readings after the first midterm, as it was a little unnecessary for me (this is because I have a good memory and read actively, do what works best for you). Please show up to lecture on time and with the readings read. Yes, there are clicker quizzes every class but they do not hurt your grade. If you actively read the readings assigned for that lecture, you will be just fine. She also drops a question when over half the class misses it and drops a lot of your worst clicker quizzes. Discussion was also fine. We had small assignments but mainly went over the concepts discussed in class. Absolutely loved my TA Holly, shout out to her. Participation in discussion matters but don't really worry about that. The exams were not hard. If you read the assigned readings and understood the concepts we went over in class, you'll be fine. I got an A on both midterms and the final by just looking over the study guides we made in discussion and making sure I remembered what each reading talked about and how the readings related to each other. The review sessions were kinda useless though. I didn't go to office hours because I never felt the need to since the class was pretty easy to me so I don't really know what those were like BUT she answered a lot of questions in class, which really helped. There were LOTS of opportunities for extra credit so I can understand why an A+ is >100% in the course.

tl;dr If you go to lecture having actively done the readings and pay attention, you will succeed in the class. I highly recommend this class and professor.

I loved this class! Prof. Collett is one of the best professors I have had at my time at UCLA. Her lectures are engaging, relatable, and interesting. She has a way of speaking that keeps you paying attention and she uses great examples to support her speaking points. She is a really kind person and I would recommend visiting her at office hours if there is any confusion. I had trouble coming off the waitlist initially, but she was very helpful and got me into the class. She seems like she really cares about her students.

Yes, there are graded iClicker questions every lecture, though honestly they boosted my grade in the end. At first I didn't like them, but eventually you get used to them and do better. They also made it so the information is fresh in your head so you don't have to study as hard for the exams (which are 18% of your grade each and there are three).

I would highly recommend this professor.

Professor Collett made the transition to distanced learning amazing! All of her lectures were pre-recorded and it felt like I learned more about the world with every single one. There were readings due for each "class" that aligned with our lectures, and we had quizzes for each chapter/ section of our learning (these were not worth many points and were mostly for us to prove we were watching lectures). We had a mini exam and a postponed midterm due to the 2020 Election, which I very much appreciated, as well as a Final exam. All were fairly simple and had a large window of time to complete. If you watched all of the lectures and at least skimmed through the readings, you were bound to get an A in this class. I would definitely recommend taking it with Collett.

EASY GE. Studied less than 2 hours for all the midterms and final, and the lowest grade I got was a 94. The two midterms and the final are all the same length which was nice, because the final didn't stress me out (since it also wasn't cumulative). Lectures are engaging and she uses lots of examples that will pop up on exams. The only thing is that there are iClicker quizzes every class, on the readings for the day. Having readings due every class felt like a burden, but they usually only took me an hour to finish them, while also taking notes on them. Really easy to get an A in this class, hard to get an A+, I was less than 1 point away, but she only gives A+s to grades above 100%. Besides that, I would def recommend Soc 1 with Professor Collett for an easy A and interesting material! Holly was my TA and she was great too!

Prof. Collett was amazing. The readings for this class are very intriguing and eye opening. We did not have a textbook, rather a book of journal articles, ethnographies , etc. Her class is not structured solely around tests, participation, assignments, and in lecture quizzes are all portions of the grading. Her tests are MC and short answers directly related to assigned readings and lecture topics.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class and had an amazing TA (Angela) and definitely walked away from the class with a lot more than just a good grade :)

I thoroughly enjoyed this class as Professor Collett has structured the course in a way that is truly conducive to learning. Since I took this class over the summer A session, my experience may different than if it was over during the academic year, but Professor Collett held weekly kick-off videos and was extremely helpful in guiding us in what we need to prepare for in those zooms as well as her office hours.

There is a lot of reading in this class which I probably would have struggled more with during an academic year quarter with other classes, but I was able to manage all the readings during the week (~9 readings) during the 6 week summer course. I definitely would not recommend taking this class with another reading-heavy course alongside this one.

The quizzes are pretty straightforward, and the midterm and final are also pretty straightforward if you thoroughly engaged in the readings and the lectures. I was able to get a 101% on the midterm and a 92% on the final. What's nice is that she will drop questions if more than 50% of the class gets it wrong.

Overall I would recommend this class, I wasn't particularly interested in the sociology before this class, but I definitely am more interested in it now.
And even though the requirement to get an A+ is >99.5%, I think it's very doable, and certainly very doable to get an A in this class.

Professor Collett is so amazing!!!! Her class was really well organized and structured for optimal student learning. She really cares about her students and their success in the class. The material is super interesting and she is very engaging and does her best to make sure everyone is on the same page. the exams are not tricky, and if you attend class and understand the material you will be 100% fine. the only thing a little tricky are the essay portions of the exams because they require you to be VERY specific. This class was a 10/10!!
Side note: my TA, Holly, was super helpful and prepared us well for exams!!

Professor Collett is one of the best, if not the best, teacher there is at UCLA. She is extremely organized with all of her tests and due dates. You will know when everything is due, all exam dates, and the grade breakdown before the first day you step into class. The exams aren’t hard as long as you go to class and keep up with the readings. She will often give away answers to clicker questions and exams if you listen in lecture. There are a lot of readings, but you don’t need to complete them before the clicker test because a lot of it is common sense. However, you should stay on top of them because they’re important and actually really interesting. Clicker questions are a downfall, but she does drop 6 of them and drops questions of over 50% of students get them wrong, so I ended up with some extra credit from them. The sections are helpful and she provides a lot of opportunities for study sessions before exams. 10/10 recommend this class.

Prof. Collett is a great professor and she really cares about her students. Her lectures are organized and she uploads all materials on CCLE, which is great and helpful for review. She uploads slides before lectures and gives out outlines at the beginning of slides, which can help you have an idea about what will be discussed in lectures. In lectures, she take everyday examples and examples from readings to illustrate abstract concepts, and those examples are usually vivid and interesting. Also, you need to take iClicker quizzes for readings in almost every lecture. Sometimes, those quizzes are tricky, but to be honest, they are really helpful to your further understanding of readings and their connections to lectures, and they are also helpful to having a sense of what multiple questions will be like in exams. Homework is almost all about reading. Sometimes, there is a sort of heavy workload for reading but they are quite interesting and I really enjoy doing those readings. Tests are not so hard as long as you engage in lectures and do those readings (which are really important!). Generally speaking, Prof. Collett is the kind of professor that I am willing to take further courses with.
