I love Dr. Casey because she is great at and thoughtful when answering student questions and clarifying concepts. I never felt that a question was too dumb or anything because Dr. Casey is super approachable. I highly highly suggest going to LA workshops since they are great practice for the tests. Speaking of tests, they are pretty fair, and you get to make up a few points by retaking the test with your groups after each one. I would take Dr. Casey any chance I could get. She makes sure to support her students and be very responsive on the Piazza board which is always super helpful. Take this class and take it with Casey!
I'd highly recommend 14AE with Casey. As a freshman who'd last taken chem in sophomore year of high school, I was pretty scared for gen chem at UCLA. Casey definitely made that transition easier because she explained everything so well. The midterm and final are worth a lot of points and can be tricky, but ultimately I think everything on the exams were fair. Definitely take advantage of the LA workshops, they help a lot in learning the material. The main difference between this class and 14A is that we have an extra hour of discussion, but honestly I never even really noticed it and discussion sections were pretty helpful anyway so I'd say it was worth it. Highly recommend this class with Casey!
Professor Casey is an AMAZING professor. I had a terrible experience with Chemistry in high school, so I was pretty nervous about this class. But Casey made concepts so easy to understand, and offered additional help by posting solutions to tough homework problems, offering numerous office hours, and creating discussion worksheets that were directly related to lecture, which was super nice to see a connection between the two.
BUT, in my opinion, this class is not a walk in the park. Chem 14AE has a lot of assignments to do so it can be quite easy to fall behind, and the midterms, known as Application Assessments, are pretty darn challenging, but Professor Casey makes sure to give numerous opportunities to redeem yourself if you happen to bomb an AA. There is also a 2 hour discussion with this class, but as long as you have a good discussion group, it honestly goes by super quick, and they are very helpful worksheets to grasp material. If you don't happen to like your group, Professor Casey and the TAs are super accommodating to switching the groups around, if need be.
Overall, Professor Casey is the best science instructor I have had thus far. I definitely recommend taking this class if you are deciding between Chem 14AE and Chem 14A.
Professor Casey is really friendly and is very caring of her students. She gave our class many EC opportunities after we voiced our complaints on not doing well on the lab reports. Personally, I think any Lab class is very difficult to translate to a virtual format because the concepts require much more time to click when you're reading the steps off of a pdf. Due to this, this class required a GOOD amount of effort. Our TAs graded lab reports pretty harshly as well as lab activities. While this is more work than I thought would be expected of a 3 unit course, I would not say it is difficult to do well. Just keep on top of your stuff.
First let me say that I love Professor Casey! She is super sweet, and explains concepts really well. But I was absolutely crushed with stress from this 3 unit class. Someone else listed the breakdown of the points, so I won't go over that again, but the lab reports and activities were often graded very harshly, and if it wasn't for Casey's decision halfway through the quarter to drop 20 points from the lab report section, I would have done much much worse in this class. Take those lab reports and activities as seriously as you can, because they often take points off for the weirdest reasons. The midterm was extremely fair, even though I didn't do as well as I wanted, but the final was very tough and unfair in my opinion. I had a panic attack halfway through it. There was not enough time given for it, and the concepts weren't hard themselves, but we'd never practiced applying more than one concept to the same question. Overall, this class is stressful, but very fun and interesting. Casey does a great job at explaining everything, I just wish the final reflected things we learned.
This is a difficult class, but it is manageable. Dr. Casey is very nice and organized. She loves to interact with students and at the end of the day she just wants you all to learn about chemistry and learn how to think and enjoy your experience.
I would try to use all the resources you can. For example, problem sets and pre-class quizzes are optional, but are necessary to understand what you are learning. The lectures are very clear and everything is very organized.
I really enjoyed the lab sections. I had an amazing group because we were very open and comfortable with each other. I would highly recommend putting yourself out there with your group because that will make your experience much more enjoyable.
The midterm and final were difficult. The example problems we went over in lecture were ten times easier than the actual questions on the tests. Don't bother taking the tests during her office hours because it doesn't help.
All the homework and labs and experiments are easy to lose points on. However, Dr. Casey was very considerate of the students and very generous with grades. She gave us an extra 20 points buffer in one of the categories and quite a few extra credit opportunities. I scored in the 80’s on the tests and lost quite a few points on other assignments, but I managed to get an A. This class was a stressful, but worth it experience.
Dr. Casey is a GODSEND. She is so accommodating and absolutely cares about her students. Plus, she's super funny and a fantastic lecturer. The tests in this class wreck you, but it's okay.
This class was pretty easy online. There's also not tooo much work because there's no homework, just weekly lab reports, which may take a few hours each week.
I really enjoyed taking Chem 14AE over Chem 14A, however the main reason I took this class was for Dr. Casey. Dr. Casey is now quitting and I don’t know who is gonna replace her so do with that what you will. The TAs for this class were amazing however (all women in stem!) as well as the LAs. Chem 14AE is definitely geared towards those who don’t have a strong chemistry background from high school, as midterms are worth a very small percentage of our grade and we have lots of other easy “filler grades”, but our final was worth 30% of our grade and was in person, no cheat sheet, so definitely don’t slack off for the final because you think you’re good with all your other grades. The midterms (called application assessments) are short answers or math questions and are more challenging, but as long as you pay thorough attention in class, do the assignments, and try your best, you’re good to go. You can also use your notes and the internet on these but the answers to these questions will definitely require more than a google search. I had taken AP Chem senior year so I definitely was way ahead of the class in the first few weeks but I still was learning new stuff we didn’t touch in AP Chem and relearning stuff in a way that made a lot more sense, so definitely don’t rule this class out because you think you’re more “advanced”.
