The concepts and methods in this lab are challenging, but Dr. Casey explains them in a way that makes them easier to understand. Her lectures are very engaging, she is welcoming in her office hours, and she always stops by our labs to make sure everything is going well. The labs are doable, especially if you go to office hours or work with a friend to understand the challenging concepts. They can be pretty time consuming at times. Overall, this is a pretty easy class compared to the other classes in the 14 series.
Professor Casey is singlehandedly one of the best professors I've had. She's super kind and engaging and always cares to help out. She was insanely flexible and always cared to give students second chances. If I could, I would take her again. Currently waiting for when she teaches 14CL. :)
Class was pretty easy, review questions and study guides were all that were really needed to succeed in this class. I definitely struggled in the lab portion of the class, but if you do well enough on the exams (which imo were fair) it won't matter. Would definitely recommend taking Casey for 14CL.
I love her, I love, I love her. She's extremely funny and helpful, and willing to learn the names of all the students that come to her office.
Not going to lie, Chem 14CL is a pretty work-heavy course. Just as you finish one pre/post lab, you find yourself immediately preparing another one. However, you can always go to her office hours and she will do the best she can to guide you to the right answers in the labs. She also makes sure she has plenty of office hours. She had office hours 3 times a week for my quarter and everyday during finals week up until the final.
That being said, unfortunately a lot of your 14CL experience will be dependent on your TA, not her. The points on your lab reports are decided by your TAs, and not her. The midterm and final, however, are decided by her and they are completely fair. She gives plenty of resources for you to study from and if you know the material, you should easily be able to ace her tests.
Take her!
Don't be fooled by the grade distribution this class is a lot of work and it's not always the easiest. The pre-labs and post-labs are tedious and a lot of work so do not procrastinate on those. Seriously. Also, the exams were a lot harder than I expected. Based off the practice exams and optional practice problems she gave us, I expected similar styled/topics of questions but nope. I was utterly destroyed by the final.
As a lecturer, she's very straight forward but rushes often. Sometimes it's tough to keep up.
The labs itself are tbh not that fun. I mean making dilutions and doing titrations are fun once in a while but just wait and you'll know what I mean. Overall, this class is a ton of busy work, lots of places where you can get points off, and the exams were a lot more difficult than expected. So happy it's over
The class is awful, Casey is amazing. Just the nature of BL is lots of lab reports due each week on top of keeping up with lecture material, so that was kind of awful. It's also really annoying having to collaborate with your lab partners on group reports outside of class, but that comes with all BL classes. If you're reading this review you probably have to take BL sooner or later, so my recommendation is to take it with Casey very soon after you take 14B. Her tests were difficult for me because I took it a year after 14B and had to re-learn a lot of the equilibrium, acids-bases stuff that you don't talk about in C or D. To study, I recommend doing her practice tests, looking over the study guide she gives you, and re-reading the lecture slides (she gives you printouts in lecture). We had one online writing assignment that was annoying to do, but really helped me understand titrations better before the final. She gave one extra credit assignment worth 5 points because my lecture did so poorly on the midterm.
As a person, Casey is adorably awkward and I found her "lame" jokes really funny. She kind of rushed through lectures, but I don't really think that's her fault. She's very approachable during lectures, office hours, and sometimes she'll even pop into your labs to say hi.
My TA, Kat Wilson, was also AMAZING! She was great at helping during labs when instructions were unclear or when I was just lost, and she also helped clarify some lecture material for me right before the final. Very very helpful, everyone in my lab loved her!
