Social Psychology with Dr. Shapiro remains my favorite class at UCLA. She is an amazingly wonderful professor that I would highly recommend to all students. Lectures are engaging and include in-class demonstrations that are fun to participate in and watch. Dr. Shapiro also incorporates clips from shows such as Friends, The Simpsons, The Office, and Big Bang Theory to further discuss a psychological phenomena, such as the ongoing debate of prosocial behavior and altruism. Office hours are also helpful as she is welcoming and clarifies any problem areas for students. Overall, I am really happy with the course and would love to take more classes with Dr. Shapiro. (:
Professor Shapiro is really great! She is clear, nice, and genuinely cares about her students. I went to her office hours after missing a lecture for a tournament, and she basically re-taught the entire lecture to me one-on-one. The class itself is super straightforward, so just pay attention in lectures, and you will be totally fine!
Don't buy the book. You won't need it.
To get an A in the class, this is what I did.
1) Go to every lecture.
2) Record the lectures, and re-listen.
3) Make flashcards on quizlet.
4) Study those flashcards the day before.
Try to write down everything she says. Her exams are based off of lecture content. Pretty easy class!
This class has probably been my favorite class I've taken at UCLA. Not gonna lie, the three-hour Friday lecture was brutal. However, we often finished early, and the material was presented in an organized and engaging way. Shapiro is the sweetest lady and was legitimately concerned with student learning. The subject matter is interesting, the tests were very easy and fair if you studied well (one midterm and one cumulative final), and the workload was very manageable. I would definitely recommend this class with Shapiro
I am purposely avoiding topics already covered about Dr. Shapiro (although, I recommend scrolling down this page to view them).
Overall, she is an amazing professor who is highly concerned not only about her field (intergroup relations and social stigma), but also about her students. In class, she is interactive, funny, explains how research studies she discusses were conducted & stops lecture to address your questions. In office hours, she is highly supportive, receptive, and uses a horizontal teaching style; she is down to earth, happy to talk to you, and very accessible. Unlike other professors, she will not make you feel like she is "better" than you. Her office hours are limited, though, so plan visits ahead of time.
In summary, she makes a conscious effort to go beyond lecturing students in class, which will become evident to you when you take her class. I highly recommend Dr. Shapiro!
Easy class as long as you study thoroughly for exams. Multiple choice is super straightforward, but you'll need a fair understanding of lecture material (especially demos, so pay attention to those because she'll ask you name concepts with demos shown in class) and be able to apply concepts to different scenarios to do well on the writing portion. Lots of extra credit and journal entries are relatively painless though, so it's not hard to do well in the class.
It's a three hour class, so there are times when I felt that class was a bit of a drag. I felt she could go through lecture a bit faster, but there are probably some who appreciate her slower pace. Like others have said, she also engages the class through entertaining demos and video clips. Plus, she let out the class early several times. Definitely recommend.
I love Shapiro! I took Psych 135 as a freshman, and it was totally doable. I decided to take this class because I was interested in social psychology and I saw the great ratings on this professor, even though it didn't even count as a GE or for my major. Don't be fooled by how easy everyone says she is, though; you WILL get a C on the first midterm if you don't take it seriously. If you study properly for the midterm and the final, however, you will do awesome. I NEVER even opened my textbook, all I did was spend a day making flashcards from her lectures (and studying them of course) and got an A in the class. She gives extra credit points during the quarter (flashback to high school, anyone?) and her only homework is to type a one paragraph "journal" per week, so there is literally no workload for this class except studying for the test. So worth it, great GPA booster for me! Plus I loved how she always used The Simpsons clips in her lecture and did many in class demonstrations to keep it interesting. Best class I've taken so far at UCLA and I'm not even a psychology major.
Shapiro's class is okay. She is a very nice lady. I wish I could have taken Karney, but she was okay. Her lectures can be a bit dry but for the most part they are good. She uses clicker, which is cool, but I feel like it distracts the class. Her midterm seemed very hard. The Final was pretty easy. Overall okay class.
