Professor Lew is so wonderful. He’s an absolutely sweetie pie and just loves teaching. He’s not trying to trick you on tests or make you know the content as well as he does, he just wants you to learn something and take an interest. I would definitely recommend this class, he’s precious and the grading scale is beautiful. Added bonus: he has a twitter account that’s just clouds!
I took both AOS 2 and AOS 3
honestly I found AOS 2 to be much easier than AOS 3 (but there are also people who feel the opposite)
I like AOS 2 better because the material is easier (AOS 3 is all about clouds, pressure gradient, weather maps blah blah blah) while AOS 2 is much more understandable for me.
AOS 2 only meet once a week (at the time I took it), I heard it became completely online), so basically we watch all the videos on our own time and do the questions before the deadline. The questions are relatively easy and you don't get penalized for picking the wrong answer as long as you redo the whole lesson ( which doesn't take that long)
for AOS 3 professor uses mastering meteorology from Pearson which I HATE and you get penalized for picking the wrong answer.
overall his midterm and final are fair, there are a few tricky ones but as long as you know your stuff you would do fine. But I did spend a ton of time studying for the class because I learn very slowly.
overall Professor lew is a really good lecturer, you can tell he really know his stuff. This class really isn't that hard as long as you are willing to study.
overall grade for both: A
IF YOU ARE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, DONT TAKE THIS CLASS.
I can't believe that a science course professor would over stress spelling and grammar so much. Taking his class is more like taking GRE instead of a GE. No other classes I ever took (history, music) requires me to remember every single letter of some super long words.
But that's not the most important part. He says shitty things like "DO I NEED TO TRANSLATE THIS INTO ASIAN LANGUAGE" in class. Oh come on, you are Asian, as well as your parents, your children, now you are racist towards us??? Yes, English is our second language, but we are trying hard to ace it, and we don't have problem communicating in English. Maybe we are less good at spelling words like "carboxyhemoglobin", but this doesn't mean we don't know materials of this class.
In general, Lew's class can be somewhat interesting, and he is somewhat humorous, but it doesn't matter if he doesn't stop discriminating international students.
If you're looking for a science GE with a lab, I recommend taking it with Lew. The lab portion is basically busy work and it might be confusing at times, but if you go to your TA's office hours, they'll pretty much give you the answers. The exams aren't that tricky, pretty straightforward. You might have to do some memorizing. I thought the cloud project was kind of fun, but it will really suck if you don't start on it early. He seems kind of anal, but I think if you talk to him, he's actually pretty nice.
I like Lew. My class was a GE but I'm north campus so I'm def not a fan of math and science. The first couple of weeks he seemed very anal about the smallest things, so I wasn't looking forward to the class. In lecture quizzes, discussion quizzes, take home quizzes. Don't get scared, they were actually really helpful and effective in learning the material. I got a B on the Midterm and a B on the final, don't let people fool you into thinking they're extremely difficult, they're not. multiple choice and fill ins that are mostly from the quizzes. I mean come on, this is UCLA right? who bitches about multiple choice. anyways, classmates can be very helpful on the quizzes but make sure they know what the hell they're talking about. don't just accept the answer, ask why it is what it is. If they can't tell you, don't trust it. also very helpful in the learning process.
overall, I actually learned something and am taking him again for my other science GE in the summer.
P.S. If yu dnt do well with accents, make sure you check the last name of the TA before enrolling. Anything you can't readily pronounce, might have an accent lol.
Professor Lew is very knowledgeable in the topic, but he is too demanding in what he expects from his students: his quizzes (which are open neighbor & open note) are easy in the beginning, but really hard in the end. You will use your notes and still fail the quiz by the end of the class. The MidTerm is nothing like the quizzes, it is very in depth in the material and he expects you to know things that he and the book does not cover. The Final is impossible to finish or understand even if you read the book and memorized his lecture slides because the questions ask about abstract concepts.
I really like the previous review, but here are my experiences from A&O 3.
Yes, he's very particular when it comes to formatting. If for example, you put your name on the right side, when he asks you to put it on the left side, you'll end up with a zero on the quiz. No ifs, ands, or buts with this guy. Just listen to his instructions and FOLLOW them. He spent nearly 15 minutes before the quiz blabbing on and on about how he wants things laid out, so it's no joke. Personally, I find it amusing how particular he is.
Yes, there's a lot of in class quizzes as well as discussion quizzes, all of which are open book, open notes, and open neighbor. But don't be fooled. There is a time limit. And you shouldn't rely on your neighbor either because chances are he/she doesn't know s**t and is just relaying incorrect answers back and forth.
The Midterm and Final exams are nothing compared to the quizzes. The easiest part are the fill ins. The multiple choice questions are another story. You'll definitely need to memorize lecture notes and slides for this portion. Also, the past exams he has posted online aren't really helpful cause they're so easy. He tells you that there'll be 1 or 2 questions from this, but i don't recall anything remotely similar. The FINAL ISN'T EASY, that's all I have to say.
The plus side is that he does give extra credit-either in the form of a bonus quiz, or just by showing up to class (usually around the holidays so don't miss lecture).
In the end, I ended up with an "A." But make no mistake, I really did study for that class. And I don't mean glancing over your notes the night before the exam. So if you're looking for an interesting GE, this is it. It's doable if put some effort in it, but not an easy A as some may call it. Hope this helps :)
The class is not that hard overall. He gives us plenty of assignments and even extra credit on top of that. He is sometimes hard to pay attention to, but he is an oddball (In a good way). The only difficult part of his class is his final. The midterm was fairly easy, but the final was pretty conceptual. You really had to understand the material to get the correct answers. The class average on part one of the final was a C+. He tries to trick you in the fill in the blank so read the question carefully, usually it is the opposite effect.
To ace the class you have to attend lectures! You have to! It is the only way to be guaranteed you will take the extra credit pop quizzes, which by the way are open book. The only reason people miss points is because he is a bit anal with what words you put in, other than that it is pretty easy. The class is really easy I ended up with a solid A!
This is an easy GE. I would recommend it. All the quizzes are open note open neighbor and really easy to score high on them. I would advise you to study for the midterm and the final, but overall it shouldnt be too bad.(study his slides). He records all his lectures and posts the slides, but he has 2 unannounced quizzes so you might want to show up to class. If you need a lab, take it with this class. It consists of 4 lab assignments that are fairly simple. He grades on a point system scale, so its fairly easy to know where you stand throughout the course. (you get the same grade in the class and the lab)
