Winter 2019 - Professor Manning is great! He's one of those professors who "works behind the scenes". His midterms are quite lengthy but proportionally easy and the final (taken during the pandemic) was hard (but fair, considering it was take home). His lectures are fun and he tries his best to make it engaging. He takes doubts meticulously. P.S. if you EVER have the opportunity to learn from Joseph Breen for your TA, take it blindly. No second thoughts. Gosh he's so helpful that I'd take an entire class even if the professor wasn't good. Now if you don't get Joe as your TA, then be sure to go to his YouTube channel for quality content on 31b, 32a, 32b. You won't regret it.

Fall 2019 - This class was harder than I expected. I learned that I hate proof-based math lol. The lectures were fine. Manning is an alright lecturer but there were often times when he'd stumble over his words or he'd ask a question to the class and no one would respond leaving an awkward silence for like a minute. The homeworks every week were honestly pretty time consuming and were graded pretty harshly. I'd recommend doing/attempting the homework honestly to make sure you secure that HW grade and prepare yourself for the tests. The tests were pretty hard and I often didn't have enough time to really finish at least for me (although the class averages seemed pretty decent). I think the class/final was curved significantly which ended up giving me a B (i'm not complaining tho). Don't be fooled into thinking this is an easy math class because its not calc or something. You'll have to put time in studying and doing hw for sure.

Winter 2021 - Manning is great! His lectures are at times a bit hard to follow because he relies too much on words like "this" and "that" instead of specifically stating which theorem/lemma/whatever he's referring to, and occasionally skips a few steps when going through proofs, but he's always happy to clarify if you have questions! Very approachable outside of class and during OH as well! His homework can be a bit long, but he provides useful hints on many problems (and often the problems in earlier homeworks show up in later homeworks, too, which is nice because then you have something to refer to). Only 1 midterm, per department policy it was 24 hrs long -- honestly it was pretty easy? I spent like 2.5 hours on it, not because the questions were particularly hard but because I worked really slowly. The median score was a 98. The final was a lot harder, per department policy it was 24 hrs long, and I spent like 9 hours on it. The final was about 30% of our grade, though, so it isn't as make or break as finals usually are. Overall I enjoyed this class and am taking 110B with him in the spring! Word of advice: the textbook is easy to read and explains things pretty thoroughly, highly recommend reading it!

Spring 2021 - I love Manning! He's super patient and always willing to answer your questions during lecture, no matter how dumb they might be (I definitely asked a few dumb ones). If you ask him questions during office hours, he's just as patient and in particular is very good at giving hints for homework questions! He includes lots of hints for his homework questions on the homework itself, and often later homeworks will use results proved in earlier homeworks, so hold on to hold homeworks and honestly, if you get stuck, going back through earlier homeworks is not a bad idea His lectures can be a bit confusing at times (he usually but doesn't always state exactly what his assumptions are when he's proving lemmas or theorems), but honestly the textbook for this class is really good, so you can always use that as a reference too. Would recommend Manning!!!!

Winter 2019 - Professor Manning was a really nice guy and I definitely enjoyed being in his class. He gave clear, concise lectures that went over the material very well. I Perhaps the thing I liked least about his lectures is that sometimes he will ask a very simple question just to check our understanding and no one will say anything because the answer is simply too obvious. Maybe that's our fault and not his but it was kinda funny to see it happen sometimes. Regarding his tests, they were of average difficulty in my opinion. I got reamed by the first midterm and consequently decided I would study much harder for the second one and the final. I did well on both of those. If you prepare for the exams well you should be fine. If you think you know the definition of linearly independent, but you don't know how to prove it, you won't be fine. So yeah if you have the option of taking Manning I certainly think you should (unless its at 8am of course).

Spring 2020 - Professor Manning is a beast! Great explainer, super helpful (literally answered every question I had in the class, even if they weren't related to math at all), and genuinely cares about students. Also, he's an actual genius. He is insanely smart and just as kind. I would highly recommend taking this course with him (or really any course, to be honest). He's awesome. Godspeed Professor Manning.
