I took this class for the GE credit but ended up learning a lot. The tests were moderately difficult and the lectures were boring at times but it was overall pretty engaging. Professor Drake is a bit intense but very kind and accommodating as well.
I really enjoyed this class. While the professor's lectures were often times boring and confusing, the subject itself was enjoyable and interesting. The professor uploads all of her slides on CCLE and she includes summaries at the end of each of them which were really helpful when studying for the exams. There are 3 exams: a midterm, a final, and a lab final. Additionally, she offers an incredibly easy extra credit opportunity. Overall, I think this class was fairly easy with minimal workload.

Dr. Jeana Drake is one my of my favorite professors I have ever had, and that is saying something as I have recently finished my undergraduate degree entirely and have taken many courses. She is engaging, caring, so smart, and communicates so well. Everything that is expected of you is very clear from the start, and she really takes the time to ensure that her students have the resources that they need. She is so kind and is so helpful in office hours, and really pursues her students to make sure that they have everything they need to succeed. Since meeting her, I have gotten to work with her in her lab and even though I am now at a different school, I still enjoy catching up with her and keeping each other in the loop. It has been almost 5 years since I took her course and I still feel as though she is a prominent guiding force through my scientific career. I cannot recommend her higher as a professor!!!
Professor was very nice but not the best at explaining information. The lab sections were terrible and we didn't do any real experiments. Instead the lab work was entirely worksheets that felt like busy work. Tests had some trick questions but were not too difficult overall as long as you did a lot of memorization.
I took this class for my lab GE, and I do not like science. I found this class pretty boring and didn't pay attention or take notes half the time during lectures, but I never skipped a class or lab. The labs weren't too hard and I usually finished at least 30 minutes early. Lab quizzes were every week, but were fairly easy as long as you read over the slides before class. She also drops your two lowest quiz scores. Both the midterm and final were multiple choice (about 60 questions) and easy. I studied maybe an hour for each and got a 92% on the midterm and 88% on the final. She offers extra credit to just go to an aquarium which was fun and easy! If you don't mind sitting through boring lectures, I think this is an easy A for a lab!
This class serves as a good introduction to oceanography, but lectures were at times boring and unorganized. It was evident that although this was the case, Dr. Drake was passionate about the subject and well-versed on the material. I went to office hours frequently to clarify information that I was confused about and it was helpful. The labs for this class are graded based on completion, but there are quizzes every week that directly relate to the previous lab. It was a bit inconvenient that the answers to the labs were not posted on CCLE, but only in the Geology building. Other than labs, there are three exams total in the class: one midterm, a lab final, and a lecture final. Although the lecture final is not cumulative, the lab final has information from all ten weeks of the course. Overall, this class is not too difficult, and there is an extra credit opportunity that is easy and enjoyable. I recommend taking it if you have an interest in the subject.
I feel like Professor Drake cares about her students and really tries, but this was just not an enjoyable class. The lectures were really dull and dry and unenjoyable. The tests weren't hard and I should definitely have studied more, they were all multiple choice - one midterm and one final. There was an extra credit where you go to an aquarium or a beach clean-up event and submit pictures. There were also weekly lab quizzes that were super easy, and a lab final that was pretty simple too. It's a pretty easy GE that you can definitely skip the lectures for.
The fact that I didnt finish with a flat A in this class really bothered me because it was so easy. I hate science things so I thought this class would be the easiest science I could take. I was right but the class was a lot of memorization. You have to learn about all the different things in the ocean which Ive honestly forgot already. The final and midterm are 25% of the grade if you do the extra credit which takes 20 mins and is a free 10 points. Lab quizzes were hard at first so my reccomendation is
Dr. Drake was a great professor and a nice person. Her lectures were engaging and interesting and the tests were pretty easy, a lot of it is just memorization. There were a few questions from the textbook readings on every exam, but the focus was mostly on lectures.
