FOR PSYCH 119Y: Dr. Wong is one of the nicest professors I've had, and presents his lecture topics clearly where he can keep your attention for most of the lecture (sometimes can seem really long, ~75 min). His tests are fair, testing on mostly lecture material with corresponding material from the book. He holds office hours regularly after the lecture where you can ask about course material or even just have a nice conversation, and has introduced me to a topic that you probably have not taken at UCLA before. Highly recommend taking him for this class, easy upper div for psychobio!
If you are interested about the study of brain damages and related effects, you will certainly learn a lot in the class. In every lecture, specially the ones after the midterm, you will learn at least something new. You need to attend classes because the professor gives out extra credit randomly in class-- once before and once after the midterm.
If you're taking this course as a GE, I wouldn't recommend it. Course material isn't easy (from a GE perspective), and because there is a single midterm with equal weight as the final (42.5%), every point has significant impact on your grade. However, the course has arguably a free 15% + 3% extra credit, you really need to work for only 85% with a buffer to 82%.
That said, if you want to take this class to learn something, I strongly recommend this class. The professor does want you to learn and the course material is quite intuitive. You won't require the book; you really only need to study the slides to do well. If you sit down to study the book, you'll waste a significant amount of energy, yet, will learn a lot in the material too. It's not worth the money though.
Taking this class my first quarter freshman year was one of my dumbest mistakes, especially for the fact that I'm not even a stem major! Thought the focus would be psych heavy, but DO NOT forget its called psychoBIO because I sure did. Lectures were really interesting, but really focus on taking good detailed notes. Midterm and final were some of my hardest ever at UCLA, extremely Bio focused so lots of details, images and definitions that had to be memorized (my study guide was like 40 pages). If you're a Comm major just don't be as dumb as me....literally why take this when there are so many easier options. Content was really interesting, but the amount of studying I did is gross. If you enjoy science you'll probably be fine but hey I warned you.
Overall, I really didn't enjoy this class and I wouldn't recommend it as a GE course. However, I took a class where the lectures were split between Dr. Wong and Professor Krasne. Dr. Wong's lecturers were far better than Krasne's, and I understood Wong's content so much more. It was Krasne's half of the class that I really didn't understand and struggled with on the midterm and final. If you pay attention to Dr. Wong's slides, you can easily understand much of the content. He is kind and very helpful, and I felt very comfortable asking him questions. I felt bad because I think he wanted to engage with the class but nobody had their cameras on, but that is the nature of online school.
This class is a bit misleading because even though it's a psych class, it's less about psych and more about bio. The work was easy, you don't need to read the book and the only other grades besides the midterm and the final are weekly quizzes that you can retake until you get an A.
During lecture he just reads off the slides which made going to them kinda pointless except for the times he gives out extra credit at the end of class. All of the info on the midterm and final are taken from the slides, so if you're good at memorizing a lot of stuff then you should be able to get an A.
Wong is an amazing professor! His lectures are clear, very helpful in learning the material, and also pretty fun. The midterm was actually fairly difficult but the final made up for it and also he gave us some extra credit to make up for it. I took this class as a GE and would definitely recommend it.
Honestly this class was not hard. I am a cogsci major and I'm not hugely STEM oriented and this class isn't as hard as some of the other reviews I've seen on here. I would say just go through the lecture slides since that's the only thing you're responsible for and just use the textbook to clear up anything that the slides/lectures don't give you. He is a very fast talker and a lot of material is covered so I would honestly suggest to type notes and take screenshots of slides and incorportate it into ur notes. I would use my notes and read a bit and used a lot of short youtube anatomy videos to help reinforce the material and I was okay. Did not put in too much work and received an A+ with low A's on both the midterm and final. The tests were p straightforward with a couple of harder questions (i'd say maybe 5-8 really hard questions).
I really recommend this class. The curve is amazing! He only allows 10% of people to get either D's or F's and because of that I got a C! I would have done sooooo much better in the class if I tried harder so don't let my grade scare you off. The only thing is like 45% of your grade is the midterm and 45% is final. The final is NOT cumulative so only material from after the midterm is on the final. The other 10/15% of the grade is these weekly quizzes that you literally only need to get half right to pass so he's REALLY lenient. The midterm and final are both 50 multiple choice questions. The material is EASY is fairly tricky and there's no discussion so it's easy to fall behind without noticing, but with a little weekly studying you are guaranteed a passing grade.
I took this as a life science GE and found it pretty doable to get an A. The class was super interesting and I enjoyed going to lectures. Professor Wong is very knowledgeable on the subject and very passionate about psychology! He does talk a little fast, but will gladly go over something he said if you ask a clarifying question. He lectures from slides which he posts online, so if you miss a lecture, or are studying for the midterm/final it is very easy to access everything that will be on the test. But, I went to every lecture because I thought Wong was engaging (and he gives random extra credits throughout the quarter so show up to get a 3% grade boost!!)
The midterm and final are taken right out of the slides, so there is no need to get the textbook (if something is in the textbook but not the slides, you aren't tested on it). Our TA, Ryan, made a really helpful study guide for the midterm and final, which helped condense what was needed to study. I found that by filling out the study guide and memorizing that, I was able to answer pretty much every question on the midterm and final. Keep in mind that the class is all memorization, so if you don't put in the time to memorize the slides, the tests will be harder.
The workload is super light, just doing an online quiz every week that you can retake as many times as you want and only need to get half right to get full credit. (Study these questions because I found a few to be on the midterm!)
Basically, take this class if you find the subject interesting, and you don't mind putting in some hours to memorize slides!
I really enjoyed taking this course and the topics covered were pretty interesting overall. This course is tough in the fact that it is a lot of information and definitions that will take a bit of effort and time to memorize. But I enjoyed this professors teaching style and he clearly knows about the information that he is teaching. This class did not have a discussion which made clearing up some questions a bit difficult but overall I enjoyed taking this class, even as a non-psychology major.
