Weinstein knows his material, but there is No partial credit on grading tests, when we took our test he quickly graded the tests with the TAs in the testing room as soon as all the students left. The homework is worth 10pts each, also, his first test was not so bad, but the second one caused many students to drop because apparently he teaches material that is not required, that other 3B teacher don't teach but he does, so you get to learn extra stuff, if you like that. Overall, he was nice but it was akward talking to him when I had questions.
I think that Weinstein is an ok professor but he is not very friendly or helpful to students who struggle with the material. I took ap calc in high school and had learned a good deal of the material before. But if you have not had this background then be prepared to teach a lot of the material to yourself. I found the Math student center (3rd floor of MS). I think that Weinstein is not a particularly friendly prof. and so I didnt go to him for help. I used my TA and the student center instead...it worked out alright.
In my opinion, the class was pretty easy. All that it requires is that you know what you're doing and the material - he can honestly make this class much harder, but he doesn't. You also have to make sure you review your notes and stuff, since what he does somewhat stress is the lecture is what in the midterms and final. If you want to do well, just make sure you practice by doing extra problems in the book. If you do it over a routine, it seriously doesn't take that much time. And, even though it may seem like a hassle or chore at first, it really does help. Also, if you need help with anything, go to office hours - I went to my TA's office hours only. I heard that Weinstein can seem a bit demeaning if you go to him, but regardless I never felt the need to go to his OH since my TA was pretty good. This class isn't that hard as long as you understand the material and practice.
Out of 3A, 3B, and 3C, his class was by far the easiest for me. His midterms and final are easy to perfect if you do his practice test, read through the book and do the book examples. The HW he assigns is even harder than the midterms and final. I never went to his office hours, but students who did told me he was not very friendly and did not seem to care that much. His lectures are good and he knows what he is talking about, but if you do ask a question during lecture, he may make you feel stupid with his response. TAKE THIS CLASS because it's the easiest math 3B class out there!
The class was pretty simple since I'd taken AP Calc, but seriously, if I hadn't, I would not have done well in the class. I felt that Professor Weinstein made everything MUCH more complicated than it needed to be. He's also a little passive aggressive, so watch out for that. Overall, it's a pretty simple class material-wise; just don't rely on the the prof or the TA to actually 'teach' you.
I absolutely hate him.
I emailed him first week to ask him a serious question about my situation in the class and if I could come and speak with him outside of office hours (as I had a class then) and he NEVER replied. EVER.
He was the most unapproachable, rude, passive-aggressive teacher I have ever had. My friends said the class was really easy, but they went to legit high schools and had AP calc. I, on the other hand, was coming in with little/no calc background and I died. I did horribly on every test. I studied by butt off for the final and got a C. But it was painful.
NEVER take him if you don't know calculus really well already. He managed to confuse me about stuff that I knew.
If you have taken math a long time ago. Or did not take AP math in high school, don't take this guy. He explains things like its review, and you're supposed to know things. For me the material was not hard since i had taken Ap calc, and for the class i was using my notes from my that high school course. However, a few friends who hadnt taken calculus at all in high school, wow!!! it was PAINFULLL... his tests arent easy at all, they are quit difficult actually and if you're taking this course with many former AP calc students, you're gonna be screwed cus the average ends up being way too high. Like i said i did good in the classs because i already knew the material, yet still i neeeded to study my a** off to get above the avergae on the tests, but for the people that were taking calculus for the first time, no matter how much they practiced they couldnt ever get anything close to the average.. hes not the worrst but hes definitely a below average prof
If I had a choice to take this professor for math, I would definitely take him again! I took his Math 3A class fall 08 and once you get used to his class (style of teaching and know how/what to study for his tests), you'll do fine. His tests are very reasonable and my ta was very generous with partial credit. I bombed the first midterm, studied alot for the second and got 48/50! His lectures are organized and clear. It's definitely possible to get an A in his class. My recommendation is to do all the odd bookwork problems and make sure you understand the problems he does as examples during lecture (there's a good possibility it will appear on the exam) and, know the general concepts (there was about 1-2 concept question on the final). I did all of that and got a high A on the final. And I'm not a "math person", I didn't even take the AP calc exam in high school because I knew I was going to fail, and I did very well in his class!
Very helpful professor, explains everything pretty well. He posted solutions to each homework, which helped a lot since most of this course is about proofs. There is a relatively higher homework load per week, but the practice helps for midterms.
Great professor with thorough and clear lectures. There are professors that seem intimidating. Although he may seem it at first, he clearly conveys the material eloquently enough and breaks everything down for you. During the course, he was readily available for office hours in person or online, and will help you think about how to solve and approach the problems sets. His passion for mathematics and insightful lectures made me think about going into a pure mathematics major.
