I really liked Professor Goodwin-White and I enjoyed this class! It definitely wasn't easy but it was doable as long as you watched the lectures and did the readings. There was a textbook that was required but I found the pdf version online for few and just printed the few chapters she assigned. If I remember correctly there was also a few other readings but she posted the pdfs on ccle. Since this class was online she recorded lectures and posted them under each weekly tab/it was asynchronous. She used powerpoint slides and her lectures were not too long which I think is important for recorded lectures. Both the midterm and final were multiple choice (with some true false) and you had a few day window to take them on ccle. There was also a few extra credit questions on both the midterm and final and they were based on a few extra credit articles that were short that she had posted. The majority of the questions on the midterm and final were from lectures but if you didn't do the readings you would probably miss a few questions. There was also a research paper that was pretty short (I think 6-8 pages or so) and you also had to do a short one paragraph research proposal early on in the class. The TA I think his name was Brian was also very helpful and had zoom office hours each week (and so did the professor).
Not a hard class at all. Tests are all multiple choice and Goodwin-White prepares you well in advance for all of them. The tests are curved and have a hefty portion of extra credit questions. The paper is as easy or as hard as you make it and is pretty open-ended in terms of topic choice. Goodwin-White is fine, she's nice enough and her lectures are fairly engaging but I wouldn't say she's a stand out for the department.
I took Social Geog in winter 2023 but it was labelled as GEOG 140, so I think they changed the class number. Goodwin-White was such an amazing and very sweet professor-- and she is extremely knowledgeable about the topics. I thought the class would be less about injustice and inequality, but that is the main focus of the course. The textbook is absolutely necessary to perform well on the tests, though it was boring at times. Her tests are like 5 multiple choice and then a few long and short essay questions. She allows a cheat sheet so I literally wrote in MINUSCULE print and nearly broke my hand the night before exams. Her essay questions are often specific and require you to write about specific instances or examples, so the cheat sheet is a life-saver. We also have to write a short review about research articles, create our own research proposal In the social geog field, and also read articles she provides (that are on the exams). The class focuses extensively on the US and the UK for some reason -- sometimes too Canada and AUS/NZ. A manageable and sometimes interesting upper div -- made much better by Goodwin-White's charm.
