Great beginning professor. He will support you in whatever you want. A Don Suggs of photo- he usually only offers positive criticism. I liked his lectures and movie choices. He has a unique way of weaving his personal life and career into the class- inspiring what movies we watched to lectures to crits. I was a hesitant photographer and he really loosened it up for me.
Pros: He's very open minded about any photography ideas--even about using found photographs that were not taken by the students, or having someone take the shots for the students as long as the actual photographer was given a little bit of instructions by the student. He has very good knowledge on the history of photography and famous photographers, but I feel that he spent too much time analyzing their photos and their influence rather than teaching us about how to take the best out of each photographer and make it our own.
Cons: He is usually late to class and return to the class really late after breaks though and the students will just hang around until he comes back. He also shows us quite a number of really long, stagnant movies that use photography concepts. Sometimes it's just too much (e.g. an hour watching a movie made about a lunch break with only background buzzing sound, of the camera slowly passing through a long hallway of some sort of factory, capturing worker's lunchtime behavior., and another one about Streets in Germany that start with J, "The J street". Some students seem to enjoy it though. Just not my thing.
