Professor Schultz is such a wonderful, charismatic, and knowledgeable teacher. This was one of my absolute favorite classes of the year and probably will be for the rest of college.

I highly disagree with the review that states "you have a distinct disadvantage if you're not part of the LGBT community". I am not a part of it and did extremely well in the course. It has less to do with your involvement in the community and more to do with your interest in the course material. I personally was very interested in LGBT history and taking this course showed me a lot of new points of view in terms of how LGBT communities have evolved. I actually think this course would be more beneficial to those who are not a part of the community so that they may see the struggles the LGBT community has been through and how completely unnatural it is for America to be acting as prosecutors to such beautiful, strong human beings. I agreed with LGBT ideals before this class but after this class, I became an ally and joined the cause instead of sitting on the sidelines, and this is largely due to the passion I saw in Professor Schultz for his community.

I ended up with an A in the class and I did all the readings. The writing grades are based entirely off your TA. I had a pretty chill one but my other friends were not so lucky and ended up with a B. Overall, I definitely recommend him and would take him again in a heartbeat but unfortunately my major has nothing to do with LGBT studies and cash for fun electives of personal interest does not exist.

Seriously, anybody that found this course challenging should reconsider school. This was the worst course I have ever taken. He assigns amazing readings and then basically encourages you not to do them. Test questions are like "What year was the Stonewall Rebellion?" Maybe that is interesting for people with absolutely no knowledge of history, current events, or politics. It was like mental atrophy for me. Honestly, I didn't show up for over a month and I still got an A. If you care about the subject of LGBT studies at all do not take this course. Most people in it weren't aware it was even an upper-division class! He is very hostile towards queer theory or queer of color critiques. I was offended by the fact that he is allowed to teach a course that purports to introduce students to LGBT studies. But if you are seriously illiterate and live under a rock then maybe this course is difficult?

If you are taking this class simply because the subject sounds interesting, DO NOT TAKE IT. This class has more reading than I've ever had for a class, and you basically have to do all of it otherwise you will fail the biweekly quizzes which make up a large part of the grade. The essays are graded extremely harshly, and you are at a distinct disadvantage if you are not from the LGBT community. You will not have the background knowledge necessary to do well. Also, if you have a differing opinion, DO NOT SAY IT, you will be chastised to no end. Nearly impossible to get an A.

If you're interested in the subject material, take this class. It's interesting and you learn a lot. But don't expect an easy A. While there's no midterm or final, the class has 2 large papers and 2 smaller papers, along with biweekly quizzes and weekly critical analyses. The grading for the class is very harsh and I was sad to end up with a B+ in a class that I had put so much time into and gotten so much out of. Schultz is a very nice, caring professor who makes lecture interesting and easy to follow; I only wish he was more chill in terms of workload and grading.

This class was pretty interesting. I didn't really know anything before it and I learned a lot! There are short quizzes and papers. The quizzes require that you do ALL the reading, which there were a lot of, but not overwhelmingly so, considering this is an upper div class. He was a mediocre lecturer; felt sleepy during a lecture or two, but most lectures were interesting. He had the TA's each do a lecture, and that was really fun. Very nice to students who speak to him after class.

best professor ever. very articulate, very organized. make sure u get along with your TA, be interested in the material and u'll do fine.

Prof Schultz is the best. I was very impressed by his extensive knowledge of LGBTS, and taking this class opened my mind much more than I expected. I'm glad I decided to take it.

Grading is more than fair, and not too difficult. There are biweekly quizzes, 2 main papers plus a small, easy one, mandatory discussions, a group project (not too intimidating), and you have to post things on a discussion board once a week (also not difficult). Try to keep up w/ the readings, but if you really need to you can just skim some of them for quizzes. Prof Schultz did a pretty good job of finding good & interesting readings for us, though, so don't waste his efforts by not reading anything. Besides, some of them were really very entertaining.

Just enjoy this class and try to absorb the important things. Most of us thought it was really worthwhile, and this is coming from a South Campus major who isn't even personally affiliated with many LGBT people.

I really enjoyed LGBT Studies M114, as I have a personal connection with the material. One must understand that there is a lot of reading involved, most of which I did in the beginning but I burned out on by 5th week. There wasn't a midterm, but instead a series of weekly quizzes that are helpful for grade boosting, providing that you pay attention in lecture and do your readings! The discussion sections seemed to try to provide a spring board for initial analysis of the readings, that we would later discuss further in class. Most lectures were arranged this way. Prof Schultz would begin with the week's topic, and then end with a class discussion on the readings. I'm not a very outspoken person, so this part was a little difficult for me. The course material was compelling, presented in a very honest and sometimes raw fashion (ex: before this course I had never heard a professor say the word "cocksucker" in lecture or read about "fucking" in a poem), and conveyed in a very rapid pace, which served to keep my interest. So with no midterm, 3 papers, and the final which was a paper, the class isn't that hard to pass with a good grade if you're self disciplined enough to keep up with the readings.
