Rooney was one of the best math teachers I've had so far at UCLA, even though this was undoubtedly the hardest class I've taken so far. His grading policy is generous but also can freak people out, homework quizzes are 10%, midterms 20%, and the final 50%, or you can drop a midterm and have the final be worth a whopping 70%. I did ok to poor on both midterms (84 and 72 percent) but I was able to drop the 72 on the final and scrape together an A. Asking questions in his class never feels scary, since he always makes you feel really good about asking by saying "great question" after almost every question, even if it turns out I was asking about something super obvious that I'd just misunderstood. He does assign a lot of homework and it's pretty difficult (compared to the other 32B teachers when I was taking it), but even though they are difficult it really helps you prepare for the exams, since honestly a lot of the homework problems are harder than the tests. Grading is pretty generous too. Take Rooney if you can!

Prof Rooney is the best professor I've ever had. His lectures are extremely clear and organized. Also, he cares his students and is always patient with questions raised by students. Exams are not hard as long as you do all the hws. Really good professor, and I want to have more classes with him!

2 Midterms. If you do bad on one, you can omit it but the final will be worth 70% of your grade. Even though I got a pretty good grade on the final, I wasn't able to get a B+ because the final is so heavily weighted. Professor teaches well and midterms are pretty difficult. Overall, getting an A in this class isn't very easy unless you can ace all of your midterms.

Just got my final grade and I would like to write a review about this class. The professor is really clear and knows his stuff, just like the reviews below said. I totally agree that he doesn't look so approachable at first, but he really tries to answer your questions and help you in class and office hours. Though I have to say that even though the lecture was really clear, there's like a huge difference in the difficulty of homework and the questions we went over in class. Also, the second midterm is quite fair but the first one really got me down. The open-book exam definitely helped me in this class because I don't think I can do as well as I did in the final without notes. Speaking of this, knowing what all the formulas are and when to use them really matters. I personally struggled a lot on differentiating all the formulas and deciding when to use which. In sum, I really recommend Rooney if you need to take this class!

Very strict professor with really nice handwriting and drawing (which is super helpful for this class, in particular). Math 32B, however, is pretty hard, and he gives a lot of homework, but it's definitely a doable class.

Rooney is by far the best math professor I've ever had. I am honestly not the best at math
(I got a B and B+ in my other two math classes so far), but if you go to class, pay attention to lectures, and do homework, you will be fine. His lectures are extremely clear, tests are fair (not necessarily easy, but nothing beyond what was covered in hw or lecture).

I LOVE ROONEY! He's engaging, he answers questions clearly, and his tests are challenging but fair. The only complaint I have about this class is that the weekly homework quizzes in discussion mean you can't really use discussion to ask questions about the next week's homework since you probably won't have started it yet. He assigns a lot of even-numbered questions in the textbook, which aren't in the solution manual and can't be found easily online.
