This is a great class! It was certainly challenging, but Jackson is a great professor and organizes everything in the class super well. The homeworks are very straightforward (helpful if you can find old solutions). There is a group project, which consists of a sizable amount of work and is broken up into 5 different increments. The exams are difficult but open-note, and there is also a curve. Overall, I would definitely recommend this class, as long as you put in the work for it and get a good project group. Also, you'll need to AISC steel manual so try to borrow it from someone if you don't want to pay like $200 for a new one.
Professor English is great. The most responsive professor I've had at UCLA. If you have questions or need help, just email him, he'll respond within the hour. Most of the work comes from the project, make sure you choose a good group so you can split up the work. Frankly the HW questions don't really look like the tests, nor do the book questions. Make sure you look over his in class examples and the midterm/final review he releases to prepare for the tests. Tests aren't hard, they're just a time crunch, he's not really gonna throw any curveballs. Great professor makes a difficult class much more manageable.
Really helpful professor. Gave us his phone number in case the zoom stream is messed up and he's not paying attention to the chat. Responds to emails in less than 15 minutes during the day. Provided a project extension because the due date overlapped with the USC game. Grades homework, project increments, and tests very fast. Final was kinda hard but expected. Design project covered the entire length of the class and accounts for half the grade.
